Thatwasclose
Hi all, I have just recently had a go at clay shooting, which I thought was fantastic. I've decided that this is a hobbie I would like to continue. My question is that would criminal convictions stop me from obtaining a shot gun licence. To give you a little background information I'm 44 years old married with my own home. I have Three convictions, 2 of which were back in the early 1980's one for drunken disorderly and one for criminal damage. The last conviction was four years ago, and that was for drunken disorderly. These were all stupid incidents that happended during moment of stupidity. Can you tell me honestly if you think it's even worth applying for a shot gun licence. Do you think the police would consider these convictions as long past. thanks for your thoughtsd on this matter.
ShaggyRS6
You have nothing to loose other than about £70. If they were that long ago I would say you may be ok, but you can never tell. It may be worth calling your local Fire Arms Licensing Dept and run it past them. The more up front you are the better. Everyone makes mistakes in life, but on the same token you do have a track record of not being totally sensible Edited January 9, 2008 by CupramanRR
russuk
I think you'll be hard pushed with a D&D only four years ago. Give your local FLO a bell and ask, they'll be able to give you a definitive answer.
Bagsy
As I recall if you don't get granted a licence they give your application fee back. D&D may be a headache for you being only four years ago. As said before, no harm in trying.
dustyfox
I'd say apply for it if you dont get it they give you reason why and you get your money back
Big_Sam
Just make sure you are 100% honest on the application form. It is up to the chief of police to make a case against you, and if you can show that you have changed your ways then you should be ok. trakker01
get straight in for it... nothing lost...you will be fine if 100% genuine in most cases, to garantee you disclose all, it may be worth getting a form from the local police, to post off , for approx £10 they will post you all the info they have on you......even the causions etc good luck. Fleabag
If you log on to the BASC shot gun and licensing page there is a section on Intemperate Habits and states any one with convictions for drink or drugs will have there convictions taken in to account, good luck mate
al4x
apply by all means but I'd not buy a cabinet before the interview. IMHO you will probably be turned down as D&D is one of the offences they treat as silly and irresponsible which may not make you the ideal candidate for having access to guns. Money wose as said they will re-fund you if you don't get it

Do you think the police would consider these convictions as long past. thanks for your thoughtsd on this matter. I have form that resulted in a years sentence when I was 19. I declared it when I made the application and it was obviously brought up on my interview with the FLO. The result was a SGC and me being told that ANYTHING that came up in the future would result in the loss of it. I now have a FAC as well with 17HMR and 7.62. You have nothing to lose mate so go for it LB
Browning GTS
One of my workmates had a couple of convictions from years ago he now has a FAC as well as a SGC. the only thing is if you do get one it is just as easy to lose it so we all have to behave from now on. Good luck with the application
Andy W
If your D & D was only 4 years ago you have got to convince them that it was totally out of charachter, a one off, not happened since and will not happen again, if they think there is any chance of you getting drunk and even mentioning a gun to someone whilst drunk they will not risk it, us with previous convictions know we have to be on best behaviour or they will have our licence off us quicker than the wife can empty your wallet. (even though it was a fair while ago) give it a try, all you have to lose is the price of the ink to fill the forms and the stamp to send it off! markbivvy
phone your licensing authority before you fill in the forms. it may save you some wrist work.
pegleg31
i got my shotgun licence just over a year ago and i have been done for various cautions, affray, crimenal damage and abh the last offence of affray was 5 years ago i was honest on my application and in my interview ,when i got my license it came with a letter saying if i got into anymore trouble i would lose my license so if you are truly sensible and can prove it youve got nothing to lose, good luck on your application weve all been stupid at one point its what we do from now on that counts

njc110381
I seem to remember in my chat with my FEO that after 5 years you have more chance. I don't like the fact that it seems to be a habit of yours (even if it is well spread out) and they may not either, but I'd say take a chance. Another recommendation would be to take the beer more steady if you know it can get you in trouble! I got charged with posession of explosives and still got my SGC and FAC. You can see the guns I have at the bottom of my post, some are pretty potent bits of kit so they must trust me now. All I can say really is good luck, we all get it wrong at some point!
