tikkamark
Howdy folks Had plenty of foxes in the scope tonight but just could not get a shot at the first two as they were in a plantation of trees looking out i could see them clear as day through the scope but as soon as i got down all i could see was a maze of branches and tree trunks it was very annoying but i did not want to risk the shot through the trees and miss, they didnt mind the lamp at all so we left them to it and headed back to the car on the way back we seen another fox as we came up over the crest of a hill it was eating a frog it had just killed but as the ground is really wet he/she heard us squelching along and wasn't having any of it and headed off So the plan was to head to a different spot a couple of miles away where a farmer that i know well is loosing a good few lambs already we had to get the culprit at all costs :yp: The fox in question is a very brazen ****** he took a lamb one of a pair during the day then came back for the other the farmer seen him sitting beside the ewe and chased him off only for the fox to come straight back and sit down again The farmer does not have a gun so couldn't do much about it That was yesterday morn. So tonight me and my mate podge lamped the whole area not seeing much so it must have been just the one fox doing the damage,we then played the rabbit distress call and sure enough a pair of eyes appeared the far side of a low hawthorn hedge then the fox appeared out on the side of the hill in full view doing a lot of sniffing i could then see him turn and head back the direction he came from,i was'nt having that so i gave a quick squeal on the palm of my hand and the fox stopped dead in its tracks and sat down looking straight at us i tried as good as i could to settle the cross-hairs but fox fever had set in a little but i managed to get the shot off then heard the dull thud followed by a large wail from the fox he jumped about 3 foot into the air and ran i knew he was hit hard and had a fair feeling he wouldn't make it far sure enough we found him 10yrds from the spot where he was hit just a bit low on the frontal chest and it exited through its side i guesstimate the distance at 150-160yrds as i didn't get the time to use the lecia I rang the farmer and told him the good news-the b****** is dead he was delighted I will keep a good eye on that spot because the farmer is a sound chap with a lot of top notch shooting land You can see the exit in this pic the bullet entered low between the two front legs Yes the waterproof legging on my left leg is on a bit sideways but i was in a rush putting them on Mark Edited January 11, 2008 by tikkamark

henry d
Nice one Mark, regarding the "getting down" and the branches, have you tried taking some stalking poles with you ?? Would that give you enough height ?
al4x
nice shooting, seems a bit early for the farmer to have lambs about must be one of the earlier flocks.

Vegeta
water proof pants should be a requirement when lamping Got a nice pair of realtree ones and they are essential kit really Nice work there. Fair play for not rushing the shot either. There is always the temptation to "chance" a shot when the night is providing lots of fox action but no shots Also nice way to keep the farmers sweet
tikkamark
Nice one Mark, regarding the "getting down" and the branches, have you tried taking some stalking poles with you ??Would that give you enough height ? Yeah stalking poles would have done the job nicely alright on them foxes because i could see them through the scope when i was standing but not off the bipods That only happens once in a while though-not really enough to warrant the use and carrying around of the poles,i will catch up with them out in the open at some stage in there future they dont mind the light so they will be got Dont worry paul plenty of them around George i have a couple of pairs of realtree waterproof trousers but they cost a fair bit and i dont fancy catching them on a barbed wire fence The wax leggings do a good job of keeping you dry when lying prone with the rifle
