dunganick
I have recently had a bit of an issue (alot of an issue) with my renault clio dci or more to the point its clutch has been slipping, however this car has done 37K. After speaking to renault they assured me there were no known issues, however the guy on the helpdesk recomended i try to claim through renault for the replacement clutch if it was a manufactoring defect, as they sometimes would pay out, outside the warrenty. Unfortunatly for me the price to get a clutch done at renault is damn near more than is worth spending on the car, thankfully LB fitted me in at short notice for a very well priced clutch (exactly the same as renault were offering at a much nicer price). Once opening up the clutch we found that the clutch apears to have broken up inside and there were shards of material collected in the bottom of the housing, which given the amount of material left on the clutch and its condition must have been the cause of the slipping. So my question is, has anyone had any luck persuing any form of re-imbersment outside of the warrenty from any manufactors, and what would your tips be. I personally cant understand why they would help me, however the renault guys seem adament it does happen. Stab in the dark, but its worth a shot. Pushkin
I agree with the guy Manufacturers need to get feedback - good and bad and sometimes the only way you can get a fault highlighted is to pursue the matter with the manufacturer. I recall a while back now, there was a car manufacturer who was adamant there was nothing wrong with the wheel and steering set up of one particular model in their range. A number of motorists who had experienced the fault wrote to watchdog and they kicked up stink for them - eventually getting the manufacturer to accept there was in fact a problem with some batches of that particular model. Whether or not you will get compensated for the fault is open to question. However, if you don't try - you get nowt! Write to them and express your liking for the model itself and how good a car it has been, but that you now feel let down by this surprising fault that has developed etc, etc, etc. The worst they can do to you is reply and let you know what they think themselves. If you are not happy with that response, then go to local trading standards and ask them for advice on how to pursue them further. Neither of the ways I have described will cost you more than the cost of postage and may result in a positive response. All the best. chunk
Although you can buy things with a warranty they must also be of "merchantable quality" and be fit for purpose. Everything has an aknowledged lifespan and if the product does not reasonably live up to this then it should be replaced free of charge regardless of the warranty. For example if you bought a £1000 tv with a years warranty and it failed a year and a day later, in theory outside the warranty, you would have reason to demand a replacement/repair free of charge as a £1000 tv should last longer than that and is clearly defective. Trading standards are quite helpfull if you ask.
stokie
Ive got a laguna estate . Which comes with 3 year 60k mile warranty. A common fault with this car is the rear suspension bushes. If you have them done at renault they charge you approx £400. So when it came to 59k miles at 35 months old i thought i would get them checked. The fee for the checking was £35 It took about 10 mins was told there was not a problem and not to worry and even gave it to me as a report in writing. At 36 months old and 60.5k miles it failed its first MOT on the bushes. Contacted the Renault dealer who checked them and was told the car was outside warranty so tough ****. So dont get your hopes to high
honda chris
i agree with chunk. i had my auto box rebuilt on my trooper. it was 4.5years old but only 29000miles, so out side the warranty so i had to pay, i did kick up a fuss with isuzu, theytold me to got ******* t he wind! i couldtake out a extended backdated warranty, butthat was more than a new gearbox. soi had the gearbox rebuilt it cost££££! came with1 year or 12000 mile warranty. it blew its self to s@#t 1year and 7 days afterthe rebuild and cover 5600miles. the company said no out side of warranty. i was miffed to say the least so i contacted trading standards got a case going and i paid with a credit card so got on to them. wrote the company who done the rebuild!!! a letter and droped my un-drivable car out side the front door. (right outside 3inches from the door) and left it there alarmed and wheel clamped. do you know what!! they repaired it! it blew up 4 weeks after that rebuild so i done the same! and after recieving it again it lasted another 3weeks before going again, so done exactly the same! in the end i think they put a new box in it. i traded the car in 3 months later! you should be pursistant, i think because i was 23 they could fobbed me off and tryed to intimadate me. it was hassel but it paid off. had a similar thing with my mates fiat, hand brake failed and rolled down the hill in to a house, but i cant type all of that! good luck regards chris
Cranfield
We had a problem with a Renault Clio clutch some years ago, which we pointed out to the Renault Dealer when it went in for service. They ended up replacing the clutch and although the car was 6 months out of warranty they didn't charge us. We didn't have to make a fuss or anything, when we went to collect the car we just paid the standard service charge. I don't think it will be easy to get anything from them, if you just take a bucket of bits in to the Dealer. They might have had to find it themselves before they would accept any type of responsibility.
al4x
as Cranfield says I think you lost the chance of claiming when you took it elsewhere. They will often cover stuff out of warranty if its a defect of a part that should reasonably last far longer, but its a gamble when you face their labour charges. pin
Do some research on forums and the like and see if you can find others with the same issue. If there is a manufacturer tech note or advisory about it find the number and wave that at the garage - they will immediately know you know all about the issue and what others have gotten off the manufacturer for it. If the garage have a tech note (not sure never owned one, audi call it that) then they can get their money back of the manufacturer and will help you. You'll only run into problems with the dealers if it's going to cost them any money, in which case your only case will be with Renault. deeksofdoom
Dugannick, I am in a similar situation with a Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDI, the clutch, flywheel, pressure plates have all had to be replaced and so has the starter motor........ twice. We are trying to get money back from the dealer who sold the car to us for the repairs, he had given us a 6 month warranty initially, however someone in their office had sent out a letter afterwards saying we had a 2 yr warranty on the car and 12 months RAC membership. Anyways we have just begun to pursue our claim through the small claims court but we need to get an assessor to write a report as to wether the car was worth the money we paid for it in the first place. Apparently this is a common fault in Ford Mondeos, how far out of warranty was your car? Regards DOD
Dave-G
I had a mondeo starter motor replaced a few years ago under fords goodwill policy which was just out of warranty but low mileage. As said above I'd say it's the sort of thing a friendly dealer would push for on your behalf. Bear in mind that they'd be paid by renault to fit it for you. me and my lad
clutches never used to be covered by warrenty, dont know if it has changed much but i doubt you would of had much luck anyway. not meaning to play devils advocate, but you say it started slipping, i presume you still drove the car with a slippy clutch ?? it could of just been something simple to begin with like a dicky adjuster
game_boy
Or do what a work mate of a friend did. He took in his Disco to Land Rover as the power steering was Friar Tucked and told them it was still in warranty. It was a few months out. Girl comes back "I cant find any record of it still being in Sir, Are you sure its still under warranty??" To which he replied, oh yes is most certainly is. He got away with it and they fixed it for free!! Edited January 18, 2008 by game_boy
