Dean k
Evening all, Has anyone used the new gas/blower that you blow down the run then ignite for rat extermination?? I had a friend talking about using one and thought it could be useful on the shoot, just don't know what they are or where to find one?? Thanks in advance , Dean

starlight32
A little hair raising if you are a over generous on the gas before ignition. Blew me and my mate off our feet first time we used it. Not using it anymore due to the unclear legalities of using them. scaffman73
I use a garden spray filled with petrol. Just pump up and spray, mind you you have got to be fast when lighting it ( getting 60 rats to the gallon )
Cranfield
The link on their UK website refers to the Defra letter (where the print is so small its difficult to read) which says; "The use of any explosive other than ammunition for the purpose of killing or taking any wild animal is prohibited under section 11 (1) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Section 16 of this Act makes provision for the licensing of otherwise prohibited methods, such as the above, for certain purposes. Our understanding is that "Rodentator" is covered by the term "any explosive" and so is a prohibited method of killing wild animals. You ask if the use of the "Rodentator" for the sole purpose of collapsing the burrows of rats, rabbits and other protected mammals would contravene the UK wildlife legislation. With the exception mentioned below (must not affect the habitat of any specially protected species, or habitat) , we are not aware of any wildlife legislation that prohibits methods of collapsing the burrows of rats, rabbits and other protected mammals, providing it is not used for the purpose of killing or taking wild animals , thus "Rodentator" could be used for this purpose." It then goes on to say that no animals must be in the burrows when they are collapsed etc., etc., I wouldn't waste my money on this, as its almost impossible to use it legally. Just smoke them out. I was speaking to farmer about these the other day. They are being sold in the UK and the farmers are being told that as long as an attempt is made to clear the burrows that ok. He also went on to explain he had seen one used on a rabbit burrow and saw rabbits running out with all their fur and ears burnt off I hope you are right Cranfield. As a keen ferreter, I do not want to see these things being used everywhere

radio1ham
i agree they should be banned it not a nice way to die for any animal thus loosing the chance of shooting them much more fun a 2 stroke garden strimmer engine is good to use it nice and light to carry around and your mate cud carry the gun all you need to do is extend the exaust pipe a little and put down one hole and block that hole with soil or a old rag and if anything down there will come running out the other holes

bob300w
Reminds me of when I was young, we put a pound or so of carbide in a fox hole with a bucket full of water, blocked the hole, and waited untill fumes were visible at another hole, we then threw a match in. Very impressive! We raced home to change our underpants, all of the neighbours were talking about it, it even made the local rag, it was put down as an unexploded WW2 bomb detonating! That was 52 years ago, and this is the first time that I have mentioned it!

bigt1754
Be careful with these rodenators, you have to prove that all reasonable steps have been made to clear the burrows before the expolsion. Our team has already had to investigate a complaint about the rodenator. Natural England will prosecute where thay can. Hope this helps I agree with a previous comment...... not a nice way to go for any animal, much more fun to shoot them.
