Dunkield
It's well known they hammer trout stocks, but have you ever seen anything like this before? http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?i...p;in_page_id=
Cranfield
Because they have to swallow the fish whole (as opposed to dragging it to the bank and pecking bits of it), cormorants cause lots of damage to fish they can't eat. I have seen lots of tench and bream especially, with stab marks in their sides and backs from cormorant beaks. Its a pity the cormorant in the picture didn't meet that little pike's grandad, I would pay to see a picture of that.
digger
I was carp fishing an estate lake and watched as a pike picked off a brood of ducklings as they made their way to the bank from a reed bed. There was no great splash, just a head coming out of the shallows and swallowing them. I took pike to 33lb from the lake that winter, with all the fish I caught being over 18lb. A lot of the stillwaters in the Guildford area are predated by cormorants, at Bury Hill in dorking they out number the ducks. al4x
either that or a .243 round staggering though that it managed to eat it, though I wonder how it got on flying afterwards
Evil Elvis
Seen a few cormorant related things....seen one at the warren take over an hour to get an ell that Id put at 2.5lbs down its throat, then not be able to take off!!! Was fishing at a lake(cant say name for obvious reasons) bailiff creeps up behind me and says "cover your ears" bang bang...cormorant above me bursts into a ball of feathers and i get hit in the face by a 1lb+ roach!!!! I thanked the bailiff AFTER he had rolled around on the floor for 10 minutes. I humanley dispatched one at a famous reservoir that had taken my live trout bait.....gave me a bloody good fight....after i dispatched it due to having 2 size 4 trebles poking out from inside its throat, i dissected its gut, it had 37 small roach, 5 perch and a massive ball of worms and bones....smelt like gutting a cod....a process i wouldnt repeat on an empty stomach again!!!!!! On the other side of the coin, my mate WoBBa was fishing in Spain and catching some monster cats 150lbs+ and it was quite common in the middle of the day to see a cat come to the surface and engulf a cormorant....poetic justice or irony? You decide but Id loved to have seen it lol. Edited February 8, 2008 by Evil Elvis

Dunkield
Herons are pretty bad for stabbing fish too. Thanks for sharing the photo, it's amazing what they can fit in! I have seen stabbed trout, some waters let you catch another if you land one of those. A baliff told me they quite often dive below the fish and stab them on the way back up, I am not how true that is though. They can be shot, but only under licence. Teal
I don't know how many have shot a cormorant in flight (under license) but they are like a jumbo jet coming down! I've not shot a goose I would imagine it would be similar. A hell of a crash when it dropped into some trees.
