Hi all

i have decided to quit smoking (again), and was just wondering if any memebers on here have succesfully quit the dreaded weed, i've been smoking for nearly 20 years ( since the age of 12) and now i am notice the damage it's doing to my health, i thought now that the warmer weather and light nights are here it would be a good time to stop.

Any tips would be gratefully received, i know it won't be the easiest thing to do, as i have tried before but determined to give it a real go this time !!

Dont laugh but what i have found worked in the past was, to go out on the raz, and get absolutly hammered, the next day you will have such a bad hangover you dont feel like smoking.

They say after 48hours the nicotine is out of your system, that proves that your body does not need it, there after you will find you dont get as many cravings. (worked for me)

another time i was blitzing a pack of menthols, smoked all 20 in about 2 hours, went sick, never touched them again, only wished i had done it with proper fags, might of stoped me altogether then :good:

Good luck all the same.

Dont forget, its a habbit not an addiction!!!

i'm in on this too, but i've got finals this month so i wont be quitting til thats all out the way. definitely agree with ice, i usually smoke about 10 a day, but on the sauce that doubles or trebles and the next day with a stinking hangover the last thing i want is a ciggy - usually puts me off them for a couple of days so i reckon that'll be my plan. will miss the coffee and fag break in the hide though.

:good: BM.

Don't think the hangover method would work for me, as a smoke and coffee is the only thing gets me through a Sunday morning after a night on the beer.

I have actually stopped before for 3 months and stupidly went back on them thinking that a wee smoke when having a few pints won'y do any harm. ( Stupid or what)!!!

Been an on going battle for me, have quit many times.

The current situation is that I gave up at end of 07 and didn't smoke for a few months and then slowly started having the odd one when I went for a pint. Currently I don't smoke during the day or evening unless I go to the pub (perhaps twice a week) then I'll probably have 5 or so. Personally I think this is manageable as long as I don't suddenly find myself having the odd one at work and then on the way to way etc etc.

I do want to knock it on the head but quite like a fag and a pint.

I have given up before for 12 months and last year for 6 months.

Xmas party season, 6 months off the ciggied under my belt, drink in one hand and thought... what the hell, 1 won't hurt. As Chandler Bing from Friends said, it was like having your best friend back and the part of your hand missing returned to you. Back on 20 a day since then....

I now realise then when I stop it must be forever, but the considered opinion is that part of the mental process of giving up is to tell yourself that it's not forever. Doh.

Anyway, I am on a crash diet and will address quitting again very shortly - it's not something I could contemplate whilst off the diet which would mean +2 stone in the blink of an eye.

I would have been on the diet for 8 weeks tomorrow (on the nose). I started at 19 stone 8 lbs and this morning I was 15 stone 12 lbs.

Wokka wokka indeed.

Well done in losing so much weight Mungler, i was kind of worried about putting on weight if i quit the smokes, and i know what you mean about the mental side, about never ever having another cig.

I have never tried the patches so heading to the doctors on Friday to talk things over with him. So good luck to anyone elso who's going to quit the filthy habit!!

i gave up last year ( July 9th!) after smoking for 18 years

i was given Champix tablets from the doctors and so far so good as i'm still not smoking

i was 14.5 stone when i packed up and have gradually crept up to 16 stone

i've been dieting (sort of!) for 3 weeks and i'm down to just over 15 stone now

by dieting i mean cutting down on portion sizes, eating healthier and drinking less beer :good:

hopefully i'll get down to what i was before i stopped smoking or maybe even a bit lighter!!

I too started smoking in my early teens smoked for 25 years . I packed in at new year . I used to do this every year and manage a few days or even a few weeks .

I have done it this year and am not bothered in the slightest now . I put away the £35 a week that i was spending on fags (£5 per pack 7 days a week) . Put it in an envolope and called it my shooting fund . It soon mounts up . I have already bought a second hand Franchi S/A and will soon be buying other decoying stuff. Beleive me do the maths and that should give you some will power .

I went to the doctors and they wont give you any thing other than Niquitin if you have not tried to give up with medical help before. Silly realy but rules are rules.

I came away with lozenges which are puke. They got me through the first 3 days then i went it alone. But i did occasionally take one when my wife told me i was a grumpy t###.

You gotta get your mind set . chose a date and do it.

Good luck boys and dont quit quiting :good:

I had to go into hospital seven years ago for an op and as there was no question of being able to smoke they gave me patches and a couple of weeks supply when I left after a week. When these ran out I went to the doctor for more and they worked. I've never smoked since. Up to the time I stopped I had been a 30 a day man for many years. I estimate that I have saved around £10,000. Best of luck to anyone thinking of doing it.

Nearly two months ago I took the kids for a walk with the dog. Asked my eleven yr old what she would wish for if she had one wish, answer was "three wishes".

Asked my seven year old the same and she answered "I wish my dad didnt smoke", gave up the next day.

Go to your pharmicist and do it on the nhs quit programme, you get twelve weeks of support and all the patches for a weekly prescription charge.

I smoked for 27 years, if I can do it anyone can :good:

Cold Turkey and willpower. There is no other way :good:

I quit 2 years ago after smoking for 35 years :good:

First 3 weeks were a *******, then it's a doddle. I know I'll never touch another one now, because they're sheeeeite

I once tried nicotine gum - load of ****, I used to chew and smoke at the same time. Then I tried patches, smoked with a patch on and OD'd on nicotine all the time

This time I just stopped. It gives you a head start if you wait till you've got a stinking cold

I can breathe again now, but the downside is weight - I've put over 3 stone on in 2 years. Losing weight is hundreds of times harder than quitting smoking ???:P:good:

Good luck :stupid:

I used to smoke 40 JPS Black or Rothmans a day. Been off the tabs for about 12 years now.

It is much easier now than it was then. In those days you were in the majority if you smoked...now you are a leper.

We went out for dinner tonight. There were two women standing outside the restaurant smoking in the rain. We had to walk through clouds of smoke to get out of the restaurant. I cant believe how horrible it smelled.

My brother moved out of the UK 2 years ago and works in Gibraltar now. He has started chuffing again. I asked him why and he said "at £7.00 for 200...it's rude not to !!!"

I have done it mate, December 30 2006 was my last cigarette, Had a nasty car accident which sparked me off again but soon saw sense

Cold Turkey was the only way forward for me, either quit it completely or not at all.

If you need any help juste PM, I have some great diversion tactics for the craving!

I agree with KrazyKayaker  I got the Champix tablets and stopped from January 14th this year. Apart from one or two halhearted attempts in the early days - I haven't touched the tabs since - they tasted absolutely disgusting. The smell of tobacco turns my stomach and like LV says - walking into pubs or restuarants nowadays is gross. Anyof my mates who still smoke can go out and have a fag but when they come back in they stay well away from me. Champix works by switching off the receptors totally - not by substituting nicotine another way. I still get whims that I'd like a ciggy - but I know it is all in my mind now :hmm:
