21gram 12bore cartridges for clay shooting

Recommended Posts

Yes, they're absolutely brilliant, they kill well, even on long birds, (whoops targets :hmm: ) and the recoil is literally the equivalent of firing an airgun.

I shot with Ed Solomons at Kibworth a couple of weeks ago, Ed's no slouch, (he's just won the ClayShooting Classic), he shot a 95 with 28 gram jobbies, then re shot some of the the same course over 50 birds last Tuesday with the 21 grammers, and did a 49, so they can't be that bad..??

The biggest problem is finding somebody who has any in stock, they're all sold out.

Well worth a try in my opinion.

Two reasons I want to try them, cost of course and the low recoil. I have an artificial shoulder joint and some times even the AL391 with 24s can sting a bit especially if I get the mount wrong (Not stopping shooting though). Going to try them in the auto as the 24 gram cartridges are thrown about 8 feet and the 28s disappear over the horizon I think it may need a new recoil spring. I know its unlikely that it will cycle but it will be great if it does. And if not stick em through the browning. Markio the Essex gun web site has them at £120 for a thousand, £3.00 for 25

Is there any significant cost reduction?

I was quoted £126.30 per 1000 by Sporting Targets at Bedford, when I went 2 days later to pick some up I was told they had sold out. :hmm:

They're not noted for keen prices, I'm not surprised that Essex Gun are doing them a bit cheaper.

You'll be amazed at how little recoil there is.

Right first time Cat,

Birds, remember we go Clay PIGEON shooting not Clay Target shooting.

The price drop is almost irrelevant as it's so small (well i guess it depends how many you shoot a month) but the performance/recoil sounds good. Might try out a couple of boxes if i can get hold of them.

Not sure if they do a trap cartridge for your gun. :hmm::yes:

I also shot a round of skeet at Kibworth with them, using Improved Cylinder (1/4) choke in my Beretta 682, and they absolutely powdered those skeet birds, even the pairs on station 4. I still went on to miss 2, but that was because I overlead them, (operator error, not defective ammo.. :hmm::yes: ).

They are currently only doing them in 7.5's, hopefully they will bring them out in 8's or 9's..??

I was given 50 of the Hull 21 gram steel shot cartridges to try last Wednesday and was quite impressed.

I missed a few longer Sporting birds that I thought I should have hit, but everything else (especially Skeet) was fine.

Yesterday I was cleaning out the back of my truck and found loads of small pieces of steel shot in the carpet.

It can only have come out of the Hull cartridges and might have been the reason I missed a few birds. :good:

Although it was a harmless and quite amusing find, it does give you something to think about.

Neil. ;)

Well its good news week, tried them out at JJs in Kent on Friday (hey the 13th even) and got my normal 60% ish of the round, worked fine through the AL391 absolutely no recoil at all. Picked them up at Essex gun I believe that they are trying to get hull to manufacture them with 9 shot so that would be good for the skeet shooters out there Nice little cartridges.

In response to the 21g load from Hull, Gamebore have just brought out a 21g load under the XLR configuration with fibre wad. Struggling to get either round my way (Northumberland).

regards

Stu

Bywell had about 500 21g Comp X left last weekend and were in process of getting the Express/Gamebores in too, might be worth a look see.

I tried some Eley Lite first's 12g 21gram Fibre on the skeet on Sunday, Seemed as fast and punchy as the 28gram eley blues, clays broke well, I would like to have tried them on something at range, another day maybe.

Think the biggest problem for me is lack of confidence in the Pattern and speed, I have enough problems with 28gram - do I shoot 7.5, 8 or 9's, so dropping to 21gram is just another perceived problem to me, they might end up being 30 to 40 pounds per thousand cheaper than 28g ideal for begins and woman.

Think I will stick to my tried/test and trusted 28gram.
