jayward
Phoned a local club today for the price on shells as im running low , i find there often avil @ a better cost and they where Eley firsts or trap 28g 7.5 @ £128 per 1000 however they advised that there taking delivery of 21gram shells and they said they had reports they achieve very good results on sporting ?? They claimed they would be adopting them for lessons and corporate days humm whats your opinion on this ? 7 grams less lead is twenty five percent less that your throwing in the sky will they pattern smaller and what about the shot string ? mirokujames
funny you talk about 21grms, i was shooting last wedensday and a boy was using them he said there wasnt much differance and they were getting nice breaks. i even saw a few guys using them on the olympic skeet layout. im tempted to get 250 to try them out. what a differance in price. Chard
I'm shooting some 24g steel at the moment, for sporting. I certainly can't tell any difference from 28g, but I've never tried 21g
Mungler
I won some 24g carts the other week and was very very impressed with them (Eley 7.5 24g) I decided that once I run out of my enormous stocks of 28g No. 8 then I will be buying 24g loads from now on. It maybe that 21g is the way and will catch on - I will give it a year and see what the consensus is then.
mossy835
24 gram shells are very good, much less kick shoot them all day.
bob300w
An interesting development, especially considering that 21g is the Winchester 3" 410 Super X load. A few years back Eley skeet and trap loads were 32g, and Eley Olympic trench were 36g. It will be interesting to see if smaller bores become popular for clay shooting in the next few years. paulos
I've been using them for the last couple of weeks and I like them, no recoil whatsoever. I haven't tried them at silly ranges but for close sporting and skeet ranges, they are spot on I can see them really catching on, this time last month they were a novel cartridge by Hull, now both Express and Gamebore have started making them
Peter De La Mare
I must be recoil proof or something, as I can't discern any recoil at all with the 28gr in an O/U. I'll still try them though, purely on cost basis. There is a thread on claysporting.com that's quite entertaining, some think they are lacking in some scenarios. http://www.claysporting.com/index.php?name...topic&t=
Nicky T
I've been shooting some of the Hull 21gram Competition X recently (that i bought so the missus could try them) and am throughly impressed so far. Getting nice breaks across the board and have't suffered any loss of score compared to my 28grams.
wingnut
Had a go with 21gm cartridges at the weekend, these were supplied by Euro guns to use on their clay set up, what a disapointment they were, i was shooting my al391 and they would not cycle very well at all, i did not realise initially it was the ammo until a guy shooting next to me gave me a handfull of white gold 28gm in exchange for a handfull of my cartridges. When he tried them in his gun ( also an al391) they also refused to eject and put the 2nd round up the spout, that is when we realised that the cartridges were the problem. What a difference with the white gold, i had to put one of these in first, followed by a 21gm cartridge just to make sure it would eject the spent shell and put a new one up the spout. I certainly noticed the difference between the 2 loads, one went off with a bang, the other (21gm) with a noise like a bottom burp. I think the guy made some reference regarding the lack of genitals in these particular 21 gm shells. The difference was also noticeable whe trying to hit the long range left to right crosser, with the white gold no problem at all. After the 1st round i took the shells back to the counter and exchanged them for more suitable ones, comp x fibre wad 28 gms, no problem at all with these, next time i go there i shall make sure that they do not just palm me off with 21 gm loads again. There is a thread on claysporting.com that's quite entertaining, some think they are lacking in some scenarios. http://www.claysporting.com/index.php?name...topic&t=754 I never feel recoil either. I think that if recoil bothers a shooter, they're can't be mounting the gun quite right When I started shooting, I was black and blue, but you (should) make minor subconscious adjustments as you get more experienced and after a while you shouldn't get any discomfort. I could shoot a thousand cartridges and not feel recoil, my arms would be tired, but that's about all
2shots
Tried the hull 21g comp x at the weekend on 50 down the line and only missed two clays,48x50 my wife and my son used them as well 49x50 son 43x50 wife so cant complain,But I tried them on the 60 sporting and scored 42X60 but I missed all the high mini clays and can usually hit about half of these, tried the mini stand again changing chokes from 1/4@1/2 to 3/4 and full and hit 7 x 10 so I think the pattern is breaking up quicker, the tighter chokes were ok,the wife loves the lack of recoil and didnt have her normal recoil bruise and her score was better than normal on dtl . The DTL was shot with all full choked different guns.

I think that size/mass/conditioning has a little to do with it as well.
clayslayer
just test fired 200 eley first lites as they are to be called, first class results on all clays i shot my scores stayed high and will be cheap but you need to try them yourself. They will be available in plastic and fibre.Ballistics of the fibre are as fast if not faster than most of the plastic .As afoot note ELEY used to make all their two inch cartridges in 21 gr so this is not a new idea but proven many years ago shot again today 20/07/08 and gave some friends eley lites 21gm fibre all said that they couldnot tell any difference between their normal 28gm and the eley 21gm good breaks on all sporting targets their speed down range is very fast so even distant targets were breaking well scored 75% so miss,s were down to me. clayslayer Edited July 20, 2008 by clayslayer
Windknot
Tried some Lyalvale Express HV 21g #7.5 carts at the local clay shoot this morning- my experience echoes what everyone else seem to be saying- little recoil, great breaks on any bird showing some belly, edge on breaks can be chippy, but it's breaking clays well enough. Any misses were due to the gun being pointed the wrong way- even the minis broke well- when I connected. And the recoil was enough to reset the inertia trigger on my Miroku. Ninj
Another for Hull 21g CompX. Only had 100 of them so far but very impressed. Nice breaks on sporting and skeet, although not expecting them to be great for trap, I havent tried them on DTL yet. That said, certainly no lack of energy at medium ranges. Id also say theyre perfect for the novice or anyone for that matter who doesnt need the thump of a heavier shell - and about as cheap as youll get a decent lead cartridge for - £120ish/1000. Express are following suit with a plastic wad and Gamebores Super XLR fibre is about £130/1000. Rich Edited July 20, 2008 by Ninj

Guest cookoff013
21grams shells are likely to be 2, 1/2" shell lengh. might be problematic in gas auto`s. tried some the other day. yep they go bang in the o/u
sodit
21grams shells are likely to be 2, 1/2" shell lengh.might be problematic in gas auto`s. tried some the other day. yep they go bang in the o/u From what I remember of several articles I have read about these 21 gram Comp X they pattern a lot tighter than 28 or 24 gram cartridges. It seems this is due to less damage to the shot when accelerated from rest as there is less damage to the pellets at the bottom of the shot column. I also seem to remember that these little cartridges are up around 1400 ft/sec. And finally they cycle through my AL391 no stoppages after 1500 rounds! Also they are great through the browning as well.
