A day out on the stubble with Catamong

Having got a very kind offer for a day out on the woodies with Catamong, I was not going to turn down the opportunity. He took time out and wrote some lengthy messages explaining how he carries out his reconnaissance and what we should expect for the day. I quickly realised that Catamong is an experienced shooter and was looking forward to the day.

We met up at 9:00am sharp, introduced ourselves and were soon on our way in his 4x4 to the hide Catamong had set up the previous day. I watched and listened eagerly as we set up our collective decoys and two magnets.

We were soon set up and in the hide which was made up of three large round bales pushed together giving us 360 degree of site and shooting capability. Catamong was very forthcoming with tips and advice and was soon filling my head with all sorts of information, again, I was eager and more than willing to listen and take it all in.

The weather wasn't on our side as it rained quite a bit but I still had a great day.

Catamong is a great guy and very forthcoming with his knowledge and wealth of experience. I was very nervous shooting with him by my side and missed a whole lot of what should have been easy kills, whilst his shooting really was fantastic, probably 90% kill to cartridge ratio (he’ll hate me for saying that but the man really is a fantastic shot) which didn't help my cause. He kept encouraging me and eventually I hit my first then went on to hit some more. We shot 20 odd pigeons, mainly woodies and a couple of ferrels too.

I learned a lot on the day and now looking forward to going out to try out some techniques and new found knowledge. Catamong will post some pictures and add to the write up giving his version of the day I’m sure.

A very big thank you to a gentleman of a man, CATAMONG.

A very happy Cos

Cheers mate!!

Catamong kept apologising for the day 'not being as good' as anticipated, but for me it was still a great day out....and once I manage to get some permision for myself, a gesture I will definitely return.

Well done to you both. Sounds as though you've learnt a lot from a maestro in a short time, probably more than a thousand pages of Sporting Gun and the like. This is a great example of how and "old head" can enthuse others to go out and have a great day in the countryside and control the pest that is the woodpigeon.

Thanks guys for all your comments, and thanks to Cosd for turning up on time and putting up with me tut tutting when he missed the odd screamer..!!

We both had a great day, I think the weather put a bit of a damper on our overall bag, I'd been watching that field for a few days and had been expecting it to produce a bigger bag, but on the day we could see a lot of birds nearby and I reckon they must have switched onto some bean drillings as a bird we shot late afternoon that came from that direction had a crop full of beans, still, that's the way it goes.

Cosd shot very well, he stays pretty cool when there are a few birds dropping in, and he's great company to spend a day with in the hide.

You're welcome back anytime Matey. :drinks:

Here's a pic of him taking down the rotary,

And here's another one of him with the birds we shot,

All in all, a good days sport.

Catamong ,

If every days pigeon shooting turned out as we would like it to ,the pigeons would have been shot into extinction years ago . Well done for taking a novice out with you . Harnser .
