Billy.
Excellent, I've been considering buying an owl decoy.

Beardo
how did he get it up that tree!? and yeah amazing looking decoy
steve_b_wales
I have tried using an Eagle Owl decoy but did not get any results. The crows vitually ignored it. I placed it on a fence post. I am now going to try and place the decoy high into a tree and see if that works. Perhap's that will make the difference,

CEREALTHRILLER
I have tried using an Eagle Owl decoy but did not get any results. The crows vitually ignored it. I placed it on a fence post. I am now going to try and place the decoy high into a tree and see if that works. Perhap's that will make the difference, I had the same results - bought an eagle owl decoy and expected some fast and furious action. Only thing that came within range were seagulls. Never tried it up a tree though I think he's using a stuffed owl - now where can I get one?
Nial
How is this supposed to work, do the crows think it's caught one and attack it to get it to release it? Nial.
steve_b_wales
The crows are 'supposed' to attack the owl as this is a bird of prey. I used a small owl decoy years ago and had a few crows with it, but I'm going to try the eagle owl one up a tree and see what happens. Dead-Eyed Duck
I have tried using an Eagle Owl decoy but did not get any results. The crows vitually ignored it. I placed it on a fence post. I am now going to try and place the decoy high into a tree and see if that works. Perhap's that will make the difference, Whenever I use my owl decoy I put it on the ground with a dead pigeon at it's feet with a few feathers scattered around. The last time I used it I shot 14 crows. I would have thought that a dead crow would work even better. You have to make sure that you have a superb hide - with topcover if you can. Baldrick
That is a cracking video, but I have no idea where one can get such a life-like decoy.

Nial
Whenever I use my owl decoy I put it on the ground with a dead pigeon at it's feet with a few feathers scattered around. The last time I used it I shot 14 crows. It looks like yer man's set his up to look like it's captured a crow. Why do crows attack it because it's a bird of prey? Surely they'd be scared of it? He's also got a good video on getting the breast meat off a pigeon. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4tjugMZ8JF8 It's in Norwegian but he definitely says "stick your thumbs" under the breast bone. Nial. steve_b_wales
The crows won't actually attack the owl, they will try and mob it to make it move away from their 'patch' Just like you see crows mobbing a buzzard in the sky. ShropshireJohn
As above, the idea is that they try to mob the Owl.. exactly like they do with Buzzards!! Infact, I'd imagine a buzzard would also do the trick, you do find these quite often sometimes knocked over at the side of the road B) Great vid, thanks for sharing :( Now to get me a life like decoy
mr smith
Infact, I'd imagine a buzzard would also do the trick, you do find these quite often sometimes knocked over at the side of the road :( Don't know about on the road but at this time of year there's plenty lying about the 'iron road'.A lot of the young ones get clobbered by trains as they feed on road kill. I'd never thought of using real dead ones before,as the plastic one's just don't seem to work.

Nial. I'm sorry to say, but that's an awful way to get the breast off a pigeon. Try this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lJW8jcyj3Jw Just break the wings off and cut the belly and split. Aye but most recipes use the breast meat so you then have to take the crowned breast home and take the meat off, ie couple of minutes per bird. If you do it your mans way it's one step and you can big the breasts in the field. Nial.
George1990
I prefer Mark Gilchrists way. Just cut them off without even putting your thumb under the breast bone. And it looks like that owl is standing on a crow? or not? As though it has caught one. And some good shots there
jojusa
I tried this at the weekend with an owl decoy similar to the one below placed on top of a gate post and we put a rook at it's feet but didn't get any interest even though we had crows and rooks flying overhead. Will try to get it high in a tree next time.
winchester
The deek above i found works better when they have young fledging or hoppers as we call them
