FOX CARTRIDGES!!

Recommended Posts

36 gram BB's be fine for fox, keep the ranger under 40 yards, best time to shoot is when he's side on so you can hit as much of the fox with the pattern as possible, when you squeeze the trigger, don't forget to swing through. If you stop your swing when you fire (this is all assuming he's moving) then you'll likely hit him in the rear and he'll attempt to wobble off or you could miss behind altogether.

I keep a few 3" 50gram No.1 shot carts in my belt for fox, have shot a few with this load and its always been instant, never had one run. Generally 36gram+ and shot size of No.1 or larger will do you fine.

Agreed with Johns advice on range (keep it under 40yards) and position of the fox, obviously a side profile gives you maximum 'target' in the pattern.

Cheers

Too many holes in the pattern at 40 yards for my liking to be using BB's,before I had my rifles(20 years or more ago)all I ever used for foxing were Express 4 shot magnums as they gave a good solid pattern out to 40 yards and still had the ability to give a Kinetic kill if a vital organ was missed, mine you we were selling the pelts back then, the problem with the 223 is a lot of the pelts would be worthless now as they all appear to have large holes in them!!

dont forget to keep your range short-ish and maybe worth patterning a few to see how they group up.

what choke you planning to use .

i use the 56gr 3" magnum BB'S from gamebore , but have now ran out :o , anyone know if they still make them , the wads are red in colour and penetrate extremly well do more damage than the pellets :good:

A friend of mine years ago was in the same predicament and decided on some Baikal AAA,you know the ones low noise and low recoil!!!!

Well the occasion occur whilst out rough shooting that I suggest we try our various Fox cartridges for patterning on an old piece of galvanise in the hedge.

Mine cartridge of choice being Rottwell 3 shot,so after pacing out 20 yards the first barrel was sent on its way,a nice pattern achieved and please with the result,I challenge my mate to do the same.

After much parading around and spouting how good these Baikal cartridges were he proceeded to let his first barrel go,to me met with a low dull thud and then as I watched the wad appeared full of shot and proceeded to make its way towards the galvanise,it barely made it and the shot trickled down the sheet not even scratching it,that was it I lay on the floor in tears whilst my mate stood complaining that he had a box of 25 of these beastly things!

So I suggest you stick with recognised good ammo as the last thing you want is to tickle them, kill them first time and humanely, dont let them learn as they become someones problem and harder to sort,I know I have picked up the pieces after some supposed hunters have cocked the job up.
