After too long I finally have in my possesion my Grandads Sabel. I know the gun is not a purdey or a H&H, but I would rather have this than any of them.

I can't find a date anywhere but the tubes are in good nick and everything else is very tight.

-please excuse the paint-stained hideous carpet, the builders are in.

  • 3 months later...

Just got an email back from gunmark (now GMK) and they say their records don't go back far enough to date this musket.

So If i was to ask any of the more 'experienced' gents if they remeber when these guns came into the UK so I may be able to put a rough age on it.

Its still so tight that its hard to close it with a sheet of paper against the breech, but the stock and muzzles are knocked about abit as if it has been moved a fair bit.

Thanks in advanced, I am sure someone out there can come up with something, as we all know PW is the font of all knowledge :look:

That's a lovely gun. I can see why you would be so keen to keep it. These things aren't about value, it's just great to see something like this kept in the family and to know that it will be well cared for. I'm sure your grandfather used to take a lot of pride in keeping it tidy and hopefully one day your kids or grandkids will do the same.

My grandad on my fathers side had a very nice english sidelock. It was from a well known and fairly expensive maker but had welded tubes and only had a black powder proof. Unfortunately I was too young to do anything about it but when my grandfather died my (stupid) aunt called the police and they told my father to take it to the local gun shop. He didn't know any better so he gave it away for disposal, they didn't even pay him anything for it (robbing *****, it was an english sidelock!)! If only my father would have contacted one of his friends with a SGC, they could have kept it for him but he didn't know. I could have had that gun, but as it stands someone made a lot of money out of my fathers ignorance. I'm fairly certain it was a Cogswell & Harrison. I used to handle it and dream of shooting it "when I was a bit older". It still bugs me that the gun is gone. The value has nothing to do with it, my grandad was given it by a wealthy chap he used to garden for before my father was born and cherished it for years. It had a hard leather case lined with red silk and was a lovely tool with stunning engraving. The moment I set eyes on it when I was a lad I wanted to hold it and I used to help clean it every time I visited - even if it hadn't been used!

I presume Sables were about before 1960 as that is the year(approx) when I bought a Silver Sable, 25" barrels as I recall.

It was my first S/S and cost me £60, 3 weeks wages, which seems quite reasonable now as it costs more than 3x to buy something similar now.
