Dick Dastardly
Hello Members, As a newbie to pigeon shooting & the site I just wondered if anyone could answer a quick question for me that mabe to you is obvious. I am sure I read somewhere that in amongst the pigeon decoys a couple of crow decoys will enhance the chances of attracting pigeon. Is this true or will it have the opposite effect? I would be very grateful for an answer to my query and think help I have already got froom the site is great!
Billy.
Hello Members, As a newbie to pigeon shooting & the site I just wondered if anyone could answer a quick question for me that mabe to you is obvious. I would be very grateful for an answer to my query and think help I have already got froom the site is great! It's perfectly fine and beneficial to put a couple of full bodied crows into your pattern. A lot of the professionals do it and you see it on their videos. I was walking the dog earlier and I saw a pigeon nestled right in between two rooks on a branch and the pigeon wasn't fussed at all! The corvids are very intelligent and usually wont come within gun range of your hide if they're slightly suspicious, so a couple of crow decoys should tempt them in just that little bit further, and the pigeons will this it's perfectly normal too. All the best Edited February 18, 2009 by harfordwmj
Warlock
You are indeed correct it has been listed on several popular and reliable sites that placing a couple of crow decoys outside of your pattern will make things attractive for pigeons. i havn`t tryed it but friends of mine have and they have said it produces results although i don`t know if they tryed without crow decoys to compare results. Always been told to place slightly outside and away from the pattern.
garyb
I've known people to put Pheasant deeks out in their pattern along with Crows / Magpies
Greenhunter
to PW. Put your crows out to one side, about 15-20 yards away, NOT amongst them. They act as confidence birds, making the pigeons feel safe to drop in. A decoy magpie on a nearby hedge or tree can also work well. You might even get to shoot the odd one too
Beardo
i've been using a couple of crows off to one side and one lofted to good effect - definitely boosts the pigeons confidence
Dick Dastardly
Thank you very much everybody! Thats a great help and obviously what the sites all about. steve_b_wales
As above. I use crow decoys with the pigeon ones. I place them outside the pigeon decoy pattern. Make sure that you don't place the crows so that they are looking at your hide. PS. Welcome to PW
daz2202
my better days have always been with 1 crow about 25-30 yards away from my pattern. I keep trying to convince myself its a co-incidence (maybe not reading this)
Cranfield
I have observed pigeons a lot over many years and pigeons and crows/rooks are very rarely seen together in the field , spread farm muck is one exception. They don't really feed on the same things. As regards the presence of the "wily" crows/rooks giving the pigeons confidence, I think that is extremely fanciful. However, if it works for you, thats fine.
anser2
I have found that if I am pigeon shooting and have a magnet out with pigeons on it crows become very shy of comming anywhere near , though if you use a magnet with crows on it draws the crows in well. MerseaDavid
When ever I have shot over freshly drilled fields I have quite often seen pigeons and crows mixed inbetween each other but when ever I set up a pattern I always keep the crows to one side of the pattern about 10 yards away from the pigeon decoys because I have found this works better. magpie_assassin
Works for me! I tend to have the crow facing away from my hideand at a distance from my other deecs. I also find that by putting the deec crow on the ground other crows will sit in nearby trees and call others in, which is when you can bag a few. funky
They are good centuries mate... put a couple about ten yards off the last pigeon decoy in your pattern either left or right .... it lulls the flying rats into a false sense of security and POW feathers on the wind and thud on the deck  Edited April 8, 2009 by funky
ash.gun
yeah sometimes it does help to have a crow a few yards further than the pigeon decoys it just gives the pigeon a bit of donfidents as crows are a very weary bird
