GJUK
Bonjour, I'm going away soon, to stay in a cottage on some farm land I've got permission to shoot on. I will be taking my shotgun (1) but there is no safe or secure location for the gun. Where should I keep the gun? I will have my dogs with me, so I'm not worried about anyone stealing it, more than im 'ticking the boxes' in the eyes of the law. I thought I'd break the gun up, sleeping with most of it in the bed at night(extreme but best for security?!). What do you do with guns while you're away from home, on a shooting weekend or similar? Thoughts? Thanks, Jon

varmintator
I normally go to hotels that have gun safes there are a few around alot have it but dont advertise it. But for a situation like yours keep it in the same room when you sleep use a gun lock take the fore end off and put that in the car. When you go out you can use a gun lock in the car and also I like to take the fore end with me so nobody could use it anyway. Or if you are going out for the night leave the barrels in the cotage and lock the action in the car.
Billy.
A quick two minute search of the firearms law and look what turns up. It's facinating what you can find online. 19.28 When only one rifle or shot gun is held and a low level of risk is involved, gun clamps or similar devices or arrangements may be adequate. Other considerations in that dwelling might be: a) Final exit doors of good construction secured with good quality locks and/or other types of deadlocking facilities; B ) Suitable locks/securing devices on ground floor windows and French/patio windows. Ozzy Fudd
how are you getting it over there? i mean in an airplane travel case or gunslip in the car? id say break it down and spread it around the room when not being used
toka_shigazu
hi..dont remember the name of the device but i bought a cable lock which secures the barrel, and stock [if you require], it has a big ball on the end of the cable and a padlock mechanism on the other end....cost about £12 about 5 years ago. it is what i have used for my fac when i take my rifle back to my parents....installed a small safe for them [which doubles as my ammo and bolt safe]...they also make them for shotguns!! Macnab
If it was me I would use one of the those short wire cables that locks into a padlock at both ends (for bikes or scooters etc). Loop it through the trigger guard and then round the heating pipes or radiator in the bedroom. You can then put the barrels elswhere (in the loft in a towel?). You can also use these lockable cables in the car. Check out Halfords et al. M
garyb
Don't be such a worry Leave the fore end in a drawer, the stock under the bed and the barrels in the boot of your car.
Dunkield
That is what I have done in the past. How many holiday homes/hotels have gun safes anyway? You should see gun security Croatian stylie
Warlock
I have 2 devices, 1 is a steel cable with some kind of anticut core, resist bolt croppers and an angle grinder is about the only way to cut it, the other fits in the trigger guard preventing the trigger being pulled, both work well. I was told by my FEO take the forend lock it in the glovebox or in the hotel safe if it`s big enough the main bit of te gun stick it in the wardrobe. Big_Sam
At the end of the day, just be sensible. Don't tell us where you are going. Keep the shotgun out of sight, preferably in bits, and store the ammo elsewhere. It's YOUR responsibility, and you have to take reasonable precautions to ensure no un-authorised access to the shotguns.
Guest
What about notification. Say you are staying at a hotel or B&B doi you have to LEGALLLY notify staff that you will be arriving with a shotgun or as long as you take neccessary precautions such as breaking the gun apart and storing it in different places, eg, suitcase and boot of car, is it your responsibility only? seb
I asked the same question to my FEO. He told me to not worry about the barrels as they are just metal tubes but to sleep with the forend as the gun is useless without it and keep the rest of it somewhere safe in the room. He said just be sensible as they didn't want any more firearms going missing. He was more interested in the people that get everything ready the night before and leave everything including the gun by the front door so they don't disturb anyone early the next morning. He said he had taken someones licence recently for doing it. I asked him what about filling the car with petrol as I don't have a boot to lock it in the land rover. He said take the gun in with you in the slip as you are fully licenced to have that firearm. You can just imagine the petrol station staff opening the till and saying help yourself as you walk in! I have just come back from a shooting break myself which included a gun safe in the cottage. It turned out it was only a half cabinet and my gun wouldn't fit even disassembled. I just made sure I didn't tell anyone it didn't fit and took the FEO's advice.
Billy.
Cheers my google monkey friend. That's ok. It just seems a bit hypocritical that your signature says "Dont ask questions. Just guess." Edited February 20, 2009 by harfordwmj
daz2202
I wouldn't put mine in a hotel cabinet. As who is to say the herbert on reception that has the key has a licence to store my gun. Which other staff members may have access. Balls to that, there is only 2 people that i would trust with my guns... one of them is me and the other one aint those hotel staff
Guest
"Balls to that, there is only 2 people that i would trust with my guns... one of them is me and the other one aint those hotel staff" Exactly because at the end of the day it is my responsibility for my gun and no one else. These are professional establishments, "the herbert on reception" won't have a key to the safe. I have stayed in many Hotels in the UK and overseas and used their safe facilities, without any problems whatsoever.
