old rooster
Saw some massive flocks today but they are all flying about in big bunches, looking forward to the early drilling as OSR has been a complete waste of time this year.
Staffs-Shooter
Certainly agree with your comments based on shooting around here. Large flocks on one field, one bang & they all move on. Best bag this winter 40 birds.

markbivvy
two of us were out Saturday, had a good few birds. but they were a lot of shooters in the same area kept the birds in the air, went back today, two shot each all the birds vanished. see what tomorrow brings. old rooster
Got some beans to look at towards the end of the week, if it stays dry enough for them to get drilled. Pigeons will be on them next day as the fields next to them have already been done 10 days ago so are at last knockings now. If I get on at just the right time it could be mega as there are thousands of pigeons in the area and they will all want the beans in preference to OSR (IMHO)
waddy
Had a go on some winter wheat today - couple of rape fields adjacent with bangers on which moved the birds occasionally. Set a dozen decoys out and stood in a ditch for 3 hours to get one bird after a flock of about 20 landed. Never saw a thing after that. Got a bit wet and a bit cold but good all the same - i must be mad !! PS - drove out of the farm and looked at another of uncles OSR fields opposite and there must've been 300+ sitting there - always the way isn't it I got out and shouted at them to get the ******* to move - i felt i had a point to prove :o
malcolm
I also shoot (or try to) over osr on the Milton Keynes/Northants border. I thought I was just **** (I probably am as well) but I've tryed shell decoys, flock shells, floaters and then built a rotary device, but the pigeons are just not landing. I have shot a couple flying about at about 6-7 am but little after that. When I return home to the middle of the town, they are there (where I can't touch them). Catamong
Set up at 8.00am this morning, I knew that the field would produce as I am the only person to shoot it this year, they came in fairly steady to start with, packed up at 1pm, picked up 42 birds for 58 shells, so pretty pleased with that, as i've struggled this year to shoot any decent bags on the rape, as they've stayed in the woods for so long, scoffing the acorns and beechmast. Staffs-Shooter
Shot yesterday on OSR. Set up later than planned at 8.30. For a change we split up into two seperate spots about 1/4 mile apart as the birds wer not on one single field. I set up under a favourite sitty tree (floor covered in $hite). As soon as i got in the hide the birds started coming in. Shot 30 by eleven. Ended the day on 50 & 1 crow at 4.30. My mate on the other hand moved three times & shot 14! Just goes to show how you need to be under the flight line. Given the birds early hits continuing the bag would have been much higher. Noticed late on that they were flocking on a field of OSR in the distants which even a banger wouldnt move them off!. Lukily the Hunt went straight through the area and put the pigeons up so we got some late sport.
aubs
Went out last week nr barnsley by request of the farmer . He said there were about 5 or 6 hundred in the woods over looking his rape.He was right, loads of woodies but the field may as well have been filled with concrete, they were not interested at all .Managed to shoot a couple coming over into the wood and the crops were filled with green berries. ???????:D??. will try again tommorow.......weather permitting. M ROBSON
There's more rape about here this year than normal so it's made it a bit harder work, much easier with a few guns out to keep them moving. There was some good shooting last week, best day 160 between 2 guns. Mark.
Ears
I have seen nothing like the number of birds about this season on the ground i shoot on Berkshire/ Hampshire. best bag on OSR so far for me was 46. I had 60 on a maize strip about a month ago. shot 26 on drilling sunday. I have my eye on a couple more fields of drilling but a few more days is required. I think there really not about in my area at the moment. all the other weekends and a few week days, I have been shooting just about 10+. ( I will most likely stop shooting this year at woodys for July, aug, sept and see if i can thin the rooks out a little as i still have loads of them about.) Axel
A call from one of my farmers ref pigeons on the OSR, so up early Sat and set up in a corner next to some 'sitty' tress, a stream and near-by OSR all badly cut up by pigeons. Got one within 2 minutes then nothing for 90 mins. Rest of field did have flags & gas gun on and I set out some bangers, but all to no avail. Upped sticks and moved to another farm. Big flock milling around so I set up in headge under previously seen flight line, got one, then they vanished again. Finally upped sticks again and went for a walk around a near-by rabbit field instead (my son got one). Pigeons did'nt hit newly planted beans as hoped (planted deep?). All a bit frustrating in my neck of the woods (to the west of Cambridge). Clipper. Can anyone tell me how the 'moderators' work out our ratings? I got 400+ last year but they still insist on calling me beginner!! Edited March 14, 2005 by Axel
ernyha
Axel your rating is determined by the number of posts you make and nothing to do with how good a shot you are.

pigeon master
Guys I was told that shooting pigeons at this time of year would be very productive. I’ve found that there are loads of birds about but unless you have 3+ guns spread around the fields then it’s almost as bad as shooting in October. Frustrating when you turn up and there’s hundreds get up in the air and then you never see them again for the rest of the day. I much prefer them nice warm days sat on the edge of flattened wheat field taking birds that seem to decoy better than at any other time of year. I’m just having a little moan at myself because I was hoping the sport would be fantastic but its turned out that if I didn’t get my rimmy I wouldn’t get much shooting in, its still bloody cold up my neck of the woods to be sat for too long. Still, its my first year on decoying pigeons and maybe its just my lack of experience that is failing me, we all learn something new every time we go out so I guess the guys who have been doing this type of shooting for years have a great edge on me. The best I’ve had this year was when shooting with KDUBYA, buts that’s my point exactly, unless there guns to keep them moving do we really have much hope. Maybe they’ll decoy the next time I’m out and prove me wrong. The PM
Paul in North Lincs.
Plenty of birds in huge flocks here in N Lincs. Same old story though..... 1 shot, = no more birds. Theres so much OSR planted this year that they are constant on the move, and not enough shooters to keep them 'hemmed in' Paul in North Lincs
sutty
Same story here lads (East Yorks) plenty of birds around but one shot and there gone. Not bothered by gas guns either, I watched a flock the other day, they lifted as it went off, and landed again within yards of it. I think farmers have opted to grow more rape this year instead of Wheat, After all the wet weather we had last year they have edged there bets. mallinson
Went on on the sunday just gone, set up on one osr field first thing in the morning, shot 6 upto dinner time. Moved onto the next field of osr just down the road at 2.00pm and shot another 20 till 4.30pm. All the advice from you guys about decoying worked really well, now i just need the practice as i should of had over 50+ but i just couldn't hit them. They were all coming in really well and i was shooting them just before landing, wings back etc etc. I didn't use any devices such as flappers or magnets, the only thing i had out was a bouncer which decided to blow over in the wind so i left it out there flat on the deck and the pigeons were all going mad for it?? all shot in North yorks...... total cartridges fired was around 50-60 :*) good day out anyway
