SXPhil
a guy I know has asked me the following question They have discovered a gun cabinet at a great uncle's who died several years ago They believe it still has his shot gun in but do not have the keys or a license to own what ever is in the cabinet What do they do as they can't sell it once they open the cabinet as they have no license Phil
hurstpol
first contact your local Police Firearms department, they will advise you, there are numerous ways to sort it, it can be left with a firearms dealer for safe keeping, they can also in certain circumstances issue a temporary permit in order that you may either look to sell it or keep it, but you will still have to apply for a shotgun certificate in the normal way if you wish to keep it, give them a ring they are usually very good. alexm
They need to get an RFD to come and collect it/them. They can store and/or sell on your behalf. You can also apply for a certificate to hold them pending sale, but they would still need to be stored at an RFD in the immediate term until you got the certificate. al4x
open the cabinet first were it a licensed firearm which it should have been were it only a few years ago then PC plod should have been round before now. If they do find a gun in it when open then contact a firearms dealer or your local FEO about getting a temporary license to cover till its sold. But get it put into storage as the gun cabinet won't be useable

MC
Don't whatever you do let plod take it away with them, only let a RFD take it. If plod take it, it will be caught up in paperwork that they don't want to do.

bobt
a mate had a similar thing, he put the gun on his licence, told the police he had found it in his uncles effects, all was well, to be honest the police just want them to be registered. btw a locksmith will soon have the cabinet open. Spot on - did this for a mate whose dad died. He didn't want the guns rolling around in the back of a plod car and possibly being lost or damaged at HQ. Get it open and have someone with SGC and FAC or an RFD nearby to step in and take them. Police just want to make sure they are on the ticket of someone breathing. Fatcatsplat
If it's a Bratton cabinet, give 'em a bell and they'll tell you how to break into it - I broke a key in the lock of an old cabinet and they faxed me through a diagram showing how to get the door open and the lock replaced. clayman
As an RFD I have handled several unlicensed guns and had them legitimised. Get the gun out and hand it to your RFD. They will receipt it to you and inform the local FLD. The FLD will do a search on the National Database for the make and serial, and make some further enquiries. Assuming the gun comes up clean, no markers on its make or serial, and no suspicious circumstances, the RFD will be allowed to release it back to a SGC holder who will then have it legally on their ticket to use or sell on. Allow a couple of months for the process.

Bl***y hell, run it's the attack of the rent boys. Do not, under any circumstances let them get around to the rear. You'll never take us alive, plus we have the gurkha's to repel any invaders. Oh and i should stay clear of dungeness if you do, it tends to make you glow a bit, not bright enough for lamping though.
