Synthetic VS wood

I fancy a semi auto (non fac)...probably a beretta extrema(1or2) or urika 2. Does the synthetic stock have any advantages?

I'm not bothered by the rain...in fact i quite enjoy sitting in rain. so a gun that doesnt mind being wet would suit me better! also living in scotland a rain friendly gun is a huge advantage!

At the moment i have a browning 325s.

Yes, synthetic kicks the backside out of wood for use on a semi-auto, particularly one to be used in Scotland. Synthetic stocks shrug off dirt, grime and impact more readily, they don't absorb water and therefore crack or distort, and they can often be lighter than timber. I'd steer you firmly towards synthetic!

I'm a total wood nut. I make duck and goose and turkey calls and have been building custom rifle stocks for several years. Wood is like wine for me.

MY SHOTGUN IS SYNTHETIC! I call it a thousand dollar shovel. Go synthetic and you'll never look back. Save the wood for other guns.

Just my opinion.

I've got a synthetic Mossberg 500 pump, and a Benelli M2 in synthetic too, but my favourite gun is my wood-stocked Remington. It just looks better  Having said that, for rain and stuff, a synthetic stock obviously has advantages, and Ive taken both of mine clay shooting many many times too with very very (like, 1) unfavourable comments.

Thats that sorted out then, thanks guys.

Hmmmmm but which to go for?!

Extrema 2 all the way i will be after it, after i get married next year - its an awesome tool cycles all the different loads you could possible want and ive known people to put 1000's of carts through without ever having any problems, another advantage is the recoil dampening tech on it since if you wanted to it is chambered to accept 3 1/2 shells (and steel shot) so would make a great wildfowling gun try one out beleive me awesome peice of kit

Also consider the SX3, I bought a new Extrema 2 (FAC) a month ago with a black synthetic stock and I can't fault it. I looked at the Benelli but didn't like it and they cost nearly as much as the Extrema, the SX3 on the other hand is a lot cheaper. I won't have any other auto than a Berretta but that's my personal preference. Synthetic stocks are the way to go for a rough/pigeon/fowling gun.

Consider the Benelli M2 as well as the Beretta.

Xtrema 2

Cycles anything from taking it out the box

Gas system absorbs some extra recoil

M2

Cycles anything once settled (some need ‘breaking in' – 200/300 carts)

Lighter than the Xtrema

Cleaning almost as basic as an O/U

Easy to have modified to the 'full fat' version (FAC)

But i am biased towards the M2, awesome gun

I cant decide between the urika2 synthetic with kick off or the extrema2....practically the same gun!

Does the Urika have the water resistant stuff that the extrema have? does it really do anything?

I can get a good deal on the extrema which makes it about the same price as the Urika, about £70 more for the Ex2...worth paying the extra.

ta for any info

I traded a 26" Urika in wetlands camo for a FAC 26" Extrema 2 in black synthetic, both good guns. I only changed it because you can't get more than 4 shots in a Urika. They are different though, the Extrema is 3.5", the Urika 3" and the operating mechanism and magazine tube aren't the same. Sorry to correct Breastman but the Extrema 2 is as easy to clean and convert to FAC as the Bennelli, I think they incorporated all the good features of both guns when they designed it.

I've had an AL390 Gold Mallard, Extrema, Urika 20 bore, Urika 12 bore and now Extrema 2, all of them very good except the original extrema which didn't lock the bolt back on the last shot if you used 28 gram, fibre wad cartridges and was a bit heavy for what I used it for. Out of the 3 mentioned, if you're going wildfowling or may want to convert to FAC in the future the Extrema 2 is the one to go for, otherwise the Urika- either one won't disappoint. I wouldn't bother with the Extrema 1, good gun but the other 2 are better IMHO.
