Hi all,

As I now need to tighten my 'financial belt', I have to purchase some cheaper pigeon shooting cartridges.

I have added a poll with a selection of the cartridges available to me.

Please leave any comments on your recommendations or post details of any other decent cartridges you know of (around the £170 per 1000 mark).

Many thanks

Chris :good:

I voted for Rio Classic Game (sorry FC :hmm:, in my defence I have never given Pigeon Specials a go).

Rio Classics in fibre are what I use for deeking in my 391. I get good patterns and clean kills (and I even like the colour of the shells  ).

The Eley Realtree Pigeon are a good cartridge but Gamebore Clear Pigeon are my favourite.

I just bought 4k of Gamebore Clear Pigeon 32g 6's with plastic wad, except they were for the export market and were marked up "Wild Game". One of my local RFD's phoned up gamebore and asked them what special offers they had on and they said they had 200k of these that weren't getting exported and they wanted to get rid of them. I got them off him at £160 per 1000.

Voted Eley Realtree 'cos they was £30 for 250.

Accounted for 88 Woodies, 5 rooks (when things were quiet) and some miscellaneous

Seem as good as rotties IMHO :hmm:

Which Rotts were you using LB?

I went through 250 Rott Jagd 30g number 5's (bright green cases) a couple of years ago and they were flippin superb, I've never had so many folded birds as I did with those cartridges.

They were pretty hot on pheasants too IIRC ???

Lylavale super game 36g in 6's for me these days. Fairly pricey but nevertheless a superb load.Around 215 a thousand in East Anglia

Man they must be plucked and dressed ! :good:

Voted for Fiocchi. The 32g are brilliant but using PL30 at the mo. Sweet load and run out at 170 ish a thou.

I would use any of the cartridges listed as they all would do the job well. My choice mainly comes down to price and in my area RIO is usualy the cheapest. Though for choice i would always go for 28 gr loads rather than 30 or 32 gr loads. The 28 gr kill just as well , but less recoil.

Zapp , I have used the RIO special pigeon 36gr load and found it less effective than the 28 gr load on high roost shooting pigeons. I suspect they are a lot slower than the 28 gr RIO target ( in 6s ) I like.
