Sloe VODKA?

Just wanted to stick these up before I went out. Picked a sack of sloes today and slung em in half a bottle of mixed vodkas, some Sminnorofofffoff and another equally oddly named russian type. ( I hate gin and everything it stands for, thats why I opted for vodka.)

A nice sprinkle of the sweet stuff and its good to go. Will be turning it and then leaving it.. fingers crossed it will be ready for christmas.

:lol::sneaky2::lol:

As a side note. How often do you turn/shake your mixtures and after how long do you stop and just leave it to settle?

Hope you remembered to ***** them first - Froze ours first and then defrosted and spiked - 2 l + gin on this week.:lol:

I have found it better to p rick(the auto censor won`t allow it) the sloes and add a little sugar first just to get the juices and colour going out of the sloes, before adding the Gin or Vodka in your case.

As for using Gin, I can`t stand the taste or smell, yet love it when making sloe gin as it doesn`t taste or smell of it.

Slightly hypocritical there, Henry... :good:

I think it was either you or Stuart who PM'd me to ask me to not alter words to deceive the auto censor! :good::lol::good:

That word really should be removed from the select 'bad words' especially as I can still call someone a male chicken (I would write it, but it's used in a rude context here)

AHH so that is what happened to my earlier post :good:

I managed to pick 3 1/2lb of sloes today off one bush....What weight of sloes do you guys put in gin/vodka etc???

No idea what 3 1/2lbs looks like, however use "parfait" jars like the ones below, fill to 2/3 - 3/4 with sloes then add sugar as this draws out the juices and starts the mingling of flavours. Just use enough to get a wet not white, grainy mix. These had a bit too much in, see the bottom. However it wasn`t a problem.

After a couple of hours add the gin or vodka to just cover by a little and then leave alone for a good while (2-3 weeks).

Taste and add more sugar if it`s too tart or spirit if too sweet.

I need to make some sloe gin this year. I keep meaning to but then don't get around to it. Maybe I'll go out tomorrow and get some. I've got a great spot lined up to pick them, should get a bag full fairly quickly.

I made my last lot in a demi-jon. If I remember rightly my great aunt used to use 1lb of sloes and 1lb of sugar to a litre of gin? I'll have to look it up, I made it when I was a kid to give away at xmas. I really like it but rarely drink it.

One thing I did make in my teens was raspberry vodka. That was really nice!

Sloe gin, sloe vodka and bramble whisky well on the go, and plenty more sloes in the freezer (making up for the aborted season last year). I've experimented with Vodkat this year. A bit weak with only sloes but a mix of sloes and brambles seems to be pretty nice.

Bought some elderflower wine a while back from Netto and it was far too sweet. I've added a load of sloes to it and that's coming along nicely as well.

Heads up by the way. Our local Aldi has some litre bottles of vodka and whisky for £10.99. I assume other stores will have it as well.

Oh! and dunno about strawberry vodka but raspberry is well fit.

I've still got 2.5 kilos of sloes in the freezer, I'm making up for the lack of sloes last year.

I've still got some 2007 & 2008 which is fantastic.

Its gonna be a very merry xmas

I've just done 5 litres of sloe gin today. Went picking this morning at a spot I'd identified back in April. Unbelievable! About 75yds of bushes heaving with sloes. Nearly 6 Ibs picked in half an hour. Froze a load and I'll be out again tomorrow for some more.
