Cold but sucessful stalk in the snow.

I was asked to keep an eye on a field of neeps which, until the snow, weren`t being hit hard by the deer as the fields had a great selection of greenery to choose from. Since the snow there have been many roe on them and I decided to give it a try as we were supposed to get a light dusting of snow, however high on the hill I went to there was more than a dusting and even so in the pre-dawn light I saw at least 6 roe in the field browsing.

I parked the car and decided to stalk, through the crunchy snow, along the far side of the ditch until I got a good view of them and had a safe backstop away from the road adjacent to us. I got 150yds along it and could see them eating about 120yds away but one buck had his head up and was alert to me, or so I thought, and as I worked along another 20yds to get to an open spot in the hedges when a doe shot out from the hedge 60yds ahead of me and ran to join the group

A few others ran further away but still in the field and the others moved slowly in the same direction and I tried to get the rangefinder on them for the distance as they were getting beyond, to me, 150yds and unfortunately the laser was showing 10 to 16 yds, which I presume was due to the snow.

I settled down in my turkey seat with my legs dangling down towards the ditch and waited for the day to lighten and perhaps the deer might turn around and walk back this way as their return to the woods was mainly this way.

An hour later they seemed to be walking towards the other corner and I thought that would be them across the road and into the woods that way, when one doe ran the length of the field alongside the road and I followed it until it went out of sight due to the hedge and I managed to turn myself and get the sticks up for a shot if it decided to cross the ditch.

It slowly edged out and then ran off until it was over 300yds away, when it stopped and ran back the way it came as a car came along the road, the deer was desperate to get to the wood but the car was cutting it off so she stopped and ran towards me and into a nice deep hollow and stopped

She was chest on and looking over her shoulder at the road, so I waited and about ten seconds passed and she turned broadside, safety off, squeeze, bang, thump and she staggered 20-30 feet and fell.

I didn`t give myself a chance when I first got there, in fact I was prepared to just go home if I hadn`t seen them in the field and the crunchy snow didn`t help, but whatever spooked her certainly helped, goes to show that you can`t right it off, sometimes things are worth sitting in the snow for an hour and a half :good:

Redhead, my sis got it in the states, however you can get them all over `tinterweb and I believe at @ $35-40.

The main bugbear is the amount of pockets, I`m forever unzipping one then another just to find a shell or my phone ......

Top thing about it is it has a big sack at the back for putting pigeons or wet weather gear and the straps to adjust the seat are easy to set so that the small of your back is well supported.
