webber
Very interesting, any chance of a picture of the machine and a description as to how it woeks? webber
Oly
Sounds like a lot of work & interesting equipment - and to be honest for relatively small gain (~£20 per 1000) - but if I had the gear and knowledge I think it would be great fun. Good to see these things kept alive in the old english back garden shed world!

webber
Thanks for the picture, very interesting. I am now wondering what or how the shot is sized. I know how the old lead shot towers worked, but this is different. Oly I cant follow your reasoning on the £20 per thousand saved? Maybe costing would be interesting? webber

Maybe costing would be interesting? webber Oly will be meaning that he pays £110/1000. So at £90/1000 these would only save him £20. Obviously a much bigger saving on expensive cartridges. myuserid
You also have to take into account how much the kit costs, no doubt it would have cost a few quid!

starlight32
I bought my shot dipper from the states for about 300 dollars. I will admit though I lent the machine to a friend who didi'nt follow good health and safety rules when working with lead and he ended up severely ill for over two years with lead poisoning. I have not lent it out or used it since
Poacher
what an interesting post, if you cock up a batch (say a begineer) can you put the same lead back through the machine to get a better lot or does the heating etc effect the consistancy ? lurcherboy
I'm inmpressed FC. Would you put a price on how it cost you to set up please? LB
fortune
That’s good stuff and a nice simple layout. Some years ago I made shot maker but there wasn’t the internet then to swap ideas with others. I made all sorts of mistakes and had good shot, tear drops, frosted lead fuz shot and solid rod shot. It was just playing for fun. How far is the drop from the edge to the oil level and does the shot have the dimple in them.

Zapp
FC, you have mentioned a few times the relatively low cost of your carts (in particular the .410 and 28 bore). Is there a law which prevents you from selling what you make (non commercially of course)? I havent the time to homeload, but use a lot of .410, and am always looking for ways to save money! Gordon R
I made my own shot years ago, but my success was very limited and I did not persevere. I admire your skill and resourcefulness. Well done.
fortune
The guys that get into the tech side of things love to make machines to make other things. I fall into this lot and just love to play about with things. I recon that you’ve got a nice little set of kit there. From recollection of my experiments I mainly had problems in keeping a constant head of molten lead and therefore the shot that was made varied in size from bb to No9. I would love to see pictures of these other shot makers that you have described. I vaguely remember the adds for the silver stream in the shooting times. Prices of components in those days were cheap. I remember buying pound cans of 80—82 powder for a whole pound and cloth bags of shelldon shot that I carried home on the tank of my motorbike. :o When I was playing about with this sort of stuff the internet wasn’t there so there was not a chance to work ideas with others who are very clever people, great engineers and innovators out there. ZB Zapp, there IS a law which states that homeloaded ammunition must not be sold on. I will look it up. Damn. Back to the drawing board then.
