  1. this little area has had birds on it all winter, it seams like they have liked the plating this year, down side it that it will be 6 years before the rotation of crop is right again. good news is that a friend phoned to say the farmer has just sprayed the rape off on another farm so might be a little bag there to go at.
  2. had another go today. 179 in the bag, dozen lost. they didnt decoy as well as i was hoping but still plated the doubles game all day. over 350 birds off this feild in two trips this week. still loads but think a new approach is needed as they didnt want it today. flying by at range with wind up their bum. some very good birds
  3. It better heal quick, i want to shoot on wednesday Bad news....Bl00dy freezer has just packed up. tripping the meter every time the switch at the plug is flicked on. anyone know where i can pick up a cheap on please.
  4. popped out to a field of wheat that has just about totally flattened. My gosh was it hot. 7 lts of fluid for the dogs and same for me. plus a 1/2 hour on the floor in pain for rolling the ankle on a rut. pain killers and stiff upper lip was in order birds came in bits and pieces so doubles and triples need to make a bag. we had 20 minutes shooting then 20 minutes nothing coming. this happened all day but when they did come we couldnt load fast enough, at one time a took a triple and and only managed to get two carts back in the gun for two more birds dropping in to be shot. missed some stupid easy shots, ok a lot of easy birds but smashed some cracking right lefts. gave up at 4pm with little liquid left and a ankle swelling in the boots. just glad i wore them or i thing it could have been a lot worse. still enjoyed the day but should have done better on the cartridge count. 2 of us take turns in the one hide, 165 cart for me and 169 for matey. not sure on total birds yet as i was more interested in getting home and getting foot looked at. going by the bucket filled i think final count will be 150'ish, tell you later when i know. the dogs just sat in the shade all day and then did a sweep at the end so not to over cook them, i think i lost about 12 birds behind in the other flat wheat field and 10 or so under the wheat in the shot field. dogs did well but i would rather leave a few birds for mr fox than burning two dogs out in the heat. wish we shot the other field as there was hundreds still feeding as we we driving away. bring on wednesday. sorry if its a little hard to read but its tuff. Phil

  10. spent wednesday afternoon shooting over the pea's had a fair few birds and now we seam to have got ontop of them. speaking to the farmer about it all i was surprised when he asked how the barley was doing. BARLEY!!! where? turns out he has 300 acres of barley in as well. that will teach me for not looking and getting blinkered by the pea shooting. 20 years from a couple of oaks is a long flattened strip. but no birds on it. the tree how ever were blue. about 300 birds clattering through the branches. but none on the strip. on closer inspection some of the barley head where stripped and a few feathers laying around. we are going to have a poke at a few but have a few problems. cant/wont use a dog in standing cereal. especially barley crop is right up to the hedge with a. even i cant see over the crop when stood in ditch. we have less than a meter between ditch and crop so thats me ******** as i cant stand, i need to sit in chair. tuesday is the first day where the weather is looking right. 24kph SW cloudy with sunny intervals. this strip is 5 meter wide and 50 meters long. 20 meters out into the field and running south to north. so, we either push our luck and see how many times we fall down the ditch or we set up on the trams lines on the south end of the strip. what will it be? Phil.

  14. hushpower 410 cover. you get enough to do the pes and a wildcat whisper. mine is camo but im not a tart so i dont worry about the colour, guess if i thought about it sooner i could have just turned it inside out.lmao. D'OH!
  15. 3 nets. 5 poles and a chair. put your chair where you would like to be and then put a square of poles around chair, 5th pole in front of chair to make triangle. two nets around out side and a third over the top of the square leaving a shooing hole. i wouldn't worry to much about where you set up. find where the birds are and set up close to them, even if its in the field. as long as your low down then the birds don't seam to worry about it. i have had many a good day set up in the middle of a field.
  16. I like barley but my god doesn't it get everywhere. wife hates the stuff. lesson learnt last year with the dog. give a grain of barley a squeeze, if you get a milky liquid the its very close so keep a good eye on any blow holes, areas that the weather has flattered, the pigeon get in these and strip the ears. this can carry on until harvest until it gets turned in by the plough when shooting them i try and only take birds that can be picked up as more damage can be caused by walking around in the standing crop than what the pigeons can case. Clove can have its days as well. again you need to watch and see where the birds want to be. feed times as any time. time of year can also have bearing on this. this time of year i don't bother going early, i like to let the birds have their first feed so they know where their going when there next feed. plus it can be a long day this time of year. winter i try and get on the field before first light but not always possible so i take what i can but i always always go look for the birds for a few days before i plan to shoot, and at different times so i can get a feel as to when the birds are on the fields Phil
  17. Good on you D. I picked something i really wanted and every day i would put the ciggy money in a jar after a few weeks it went to every few days and by the end of year it was monthly. well worth it as i have a the shotgun to show for it and i just let that smoke instead. keep it up as it does get easier, promise.
