  1. I believe that there are those who would consider "Normal for Norfolk" an oxymoron. Happily I,m not one of them. LOTW
  2. There is a good collectors market for Hardy fishing reels, there is even books been written on the subject. May I suggest that you do some research of well known auction sites, Not long ago there was a reel put up, it was among items inherited, the vendors had no idea of it,s value, someone offered them 600 pounds to close the auction, someone else told them to hang on, it sold for over 2,000. I,m not saying that what you have is in any way extrordanary, only that this is a specialised field and you need to tread carefully and test the market. Bare in mind two things, reels were made in their thousands, but it was, and is, a world wide market. good luck LOTW
  3. I was chatting with an old freind of mine about this very subject only yesterday, we both agreed that we have become consumers to an industry without really realising it. I can remember what I carried when I started decoying, I had 13 decoys made out of industial machinary belt, twice the size of a pigeon, a slasher for making hides, some twizle in case I needed to tie back a branch, and no more than 50 cartidges. If I needed more then I carried some shot birds back to the car to collect them (I could carry 21 birds in my bag), In those days you seldom even saw a gun being carried in a slip, So no poles, no netting, no rotary, no full size decoys, and no hassle from anyone. 4. I beliave I have an opposite view to Harnser, I believe that late hatched squabs are on rape as soon as they leave the nest and that they are on rape for probbably the next ten months. A factor in this is the efficiency of modern drilling technec,s where little or nothing is left behind. I find it difficult to believe that a bird as adaptable as a pigeon fells forced to eat something it does,nt like, afterall, if we are to believe that bad weather will push birds south, would,nt the lack of food they like also move them on. I use the point about drilling only as an illistration because how many of us have seen birds stick to the rape right the way through the drilling season as if it was,nt happening. LOTW
  5. I think IMPERFECTION made a good point, probably every police authority has an armed responce unit which is not only extremely expensive to maintain, but also needs the odd "shout" to justify it,s existance LOTW
  6. Have a look at the Guntrader website, there,s usually about 70 left handed guns on offer, new and second hand LOTW
  7. I came across 3 or 4 shooting times magazines from the late fifties ( 1957 ) apart from being in black and white, and the script a little stilted, the could be this weeks LOTW
  8. One of the guns who regularly lamps for fox,s on his shot showed me where he kept seeing an old dog fox that would not respond to calling, if he tried to get closer it just seemed to melt away. He was sure it was the same fox because he could see a scab mark on it,s left hind leg. Any way two day,s later I had him in a snare LOTW
  9. I believe it has been established that British Justice is the best that money can buy. LOTW
  10. I,m surprised not only by the number of sloe,s this year, but also by the size, they,re very near the size of damsons. Not quite ready yet, I think they improve with a touch of frost. LOTW
  11. I think that we have to discard the idea that what we are talking about is sport, it,s not, it,s business and the people involved in it are not going to jeopardize their own positions by introducing anything remotely contrivertial. LOTW
  12. Blackbart watch those bean fields, pigeons love beans and sooner or later they will be found. I,v seen fields absolutly grey. Watch for them chitting as well the pigeons see the little green shoots long before we can, the little shoot leads them to the bean under it. I would watch those fields like a hawk. LOTW
  13. In mainly arable area,s the quicker the stubble is attacked the better! there is just to much of it, as the area of stubble is reduced the birds are more concentrated. There is also the need to cultivate ready for drilling the rape, where would we be without that? At the moment the flight lines are non-existant, the birds are falling of the trees on to food LOTW
  14. Could well be trying to teach grandmother how to suck eggs, but seeing the amount of grain thats been combined reminded me of an old gamekeeper telling me that at this time of year the availability of grit was as important as the availability of the grain, and the birds will hang around better. LOTW
  15. I had an operation for prostate cancer five years ago, got the all clear this April. During that time I went shooting and fishing and did,nt alter my way of life one little bit, so it,s not all doom and gloom. I would tell your friend to hang on to everthing, he could out live us all LOTW
  16. A question for you gents who use fox snares? Can anyone tell me of a good tool for cutting good quality snares. I ask, because my hands are no longer strong enough to put the pressure on pliers to do the job. I usually carry a junior hacksaw in the vehicle but I,m sure there must be something handier. Thanks on advance LOTW.
  17. The Daily Mail has recently been making it,s selective rant about something being an affront to British justice. I wonder whether this incident will escape their radar just like the so called celebrities who are found innocent of speeding charges, and so forth because someone has not dotted an i , crossed a t or missed out a hyphen. They would better discribe British justice as an affront to the British people LOTW
  18. Can you recollect what % of your empty cartidges you laughingly left behind when you had finished. LOTW
  19. I believe that the expences fiasco will continue to cascade down to local council level and give the media a nice long run of sensational headlines. LOTW
  20. One more for Leeva,s thread. Book, here we read it, there you colour, sorry color it
  21. The original post mentions justice. I believe it has been moted that in this country justice is not allowed to impede the law.
  22. On Sunday gone I tried to take advantage of the bouncer offer online, made a right hash of it, got as far as the check out then lost every thing. I phoned the warehouse up Monday morning to see if the payment had gone through, it had,nt so my order was taken over the phone. The bouncers arrived this morning! how is that for service? LOTW
  23. Thank you gentlemen, I,m obliged. LOTW
  24. As the title say,s for left-handed air-guns? There is no bolt to operate, a scope is generaly used so eye dominance is not an issue. I pose the question because, although I,ve been shooting for some time , I have never used a rifle of any kind but I am considering getting one to use on the squirrels. I shoot of the left shoulder, and being aware of the percentages of left-handed to right-handed amonge fire arms in general I can see where it may be difficult to pick a reasonable second-hand one
  25. Blunderbus is quite right, there is a case for a sub section for , shall we say , those old enough to appreciate, without deriding, those who attempt to write , and probably talk, in a cohesive manner. Now watch the snipers with their "stop moaning", "bored or something", "get a life", You could write the script for them. What is not readily recognised, is that those who are "grumpy old men" have lived long enough and worked hard enough to have earned the right to be just as unhappy with the young as the young appear to be with the elderly. Harnser, a great fly. LOTW
