  1. They make fantastic burgers, just follow any good burgers recipe, make a batch of them and freeze, put a layer of grease proof paper between each burger. As regards what to look out for, Pigeon Canker is a horrible disease, mainly found during mild damp winters, you cannot fail to spot it, yellow growth in mouth and throat and birds are usually in poor condition, don't know if it effects the flesh of the bird but if I shoot one I dump it.
  2. Don't usually bother anymore on winter rape specially during Jan Feb, but over the years I have had some fairly big bags on spring rape, do you see much of it in your area? and how well do you do on it?
  3. Don't know how true it is but i was told by an old keeper that woodcock gang up in warm woods ready for the trip home, that might explain the reported influx of woodcock, if true!
  4. They are only lucky if the pigeons come back and they can shoot some, I dare say there are lots of fields with pigeons on but whether they are shoot-able is another question.
  5. Barbecued bananas dribbled with maple syrup and a blob of vanilla ice cream, haven on a warm summers day. Home made hot-dogs with fried onions and tomato ketchup, messy or what! Fish finger sandwich with tomato ketchup (loads of butter on the bread) Eating fish and chips out of the paper, plenty of salt and vinegar please. Not strictly a combo but! The cockle and mussel bar at the sea side, Hmmm I can smell and taste them now.
  6. Bit late now, but why did switch to a 20 bore, from I presume, a 12 bore?
  7. Gamebore clear pigeon 6s 30g fibre wad, good all round cartridge, or you could look at a cheaper cartridge Eley, not so keen on these.
  8. Express used to-be a good cheap cartridge, I used nothing else for years but the price as crept up over the years, now I only use Gamebore clear pigeon 6-30g fib, great cartridge and some of the shots I taken at range 40+ yards with clean kills has surprised me, think the last time I brought some they were about £208 per 1000 as against express @ £230

  13. He has done that, see the replies from FN.
  14. I also look forward to that report.
  15. Sorry JDog for hijacking your thread but i just had to reply to FN So! I have land that other people shoot don't give up, is it far from you, if not go down there and lean on the gate, stop there for as long as you can if you are spotted someone might come down to you and ask what you are doing, hopefully the owner, you then brake down in tears at his knees, no only joking, have a chat with him/her. Failing that i would go down there and see if anyone is shooting it if not go and knock on the door and say hello Mr Farmer my names FalconFN or what ever, I phoned you the other day about shooting some pigeons on the bottom field I know you said you had people shooting your ground but I was just wondering as there is no one shooting the field and I have a few days off work, would sell me a day on the pigeons, give him as much bull poo as you like, I am insured, I have a bit of land I shoot on but its not very good, I promise I will not come again unless you say so or bring other people. It works I know, but if it doesn't them tell him to f### off and i hope the pigeons eat all your rape next winter, no don't just winding you up. Give it a go you never know.
  16. Yep the stuff on the left of your pic looks like standing barley. Think you might have missed out there but you never know they might be still hitting it hard, I have seen this many times over the years and boy does it pull the pigeons, get yourself down the farm and ask if you can have a go at them, you might just shoot the biggest bag of your life to date. Good luck PS if the farmer will not let you shot it, don't go back there because it will brake your heart.
  17. FalconFN is that barley stubble or are you saying its standing barley (not been combined)
  18. Seen the first few fields back the 80s I noticed the colour difference and ask the farmer why it looked different from the stuff he had sown in the past, he told me about the different types, if you wish to find out bit more, Google it, i am sure there is plenty of info on it. Yes as PC said pigeons are not keen on it because of its toxic content, it as killed wild life and farm stock in the past.
  19. Don't know all the chemical compounds in each type but yes you are correct in saying there are two main types of rape. oilseed rape grown for edible consumption contains less than 2% erucic acid. Oilseed rape cultivated for industrial use still contains high levels of erucic acid (40-60%) Using genetic manipulation the breeders are striving to increase the level of erucic acid to 70-80% to maximise on its industrial potential.
  20. I presume you mean the seeds and not the leaves, the leaves contain no fat and are also slightly toxic and are of very little nutritional value to pigeons. Must say I have never shot any pigeons on a field of sown rape, or do you mean spring rape which can produce some very big bags in spring.
  21. think this might have something to-do with it. UK rape sown 1975, 3000 hectares UK rape sown 2015, 700,000 hectares
  22. Another one bits the dust.....no I hope you will be very happy in your sentence marriage, good luck and all the best too you both.
  23. From what others are saying and from what I have seen they are hitting the rape plus berries
  24. 'the whole three part thing' What she's going on the honeymoon with them?? My wife as been invited to a wedding and not me because the couple were trying to keep costs down but I was able to join her on the evening after the wedding, is that not an option? Are they friends or relatives?
