  1. Living here in the Scottish Borders , which is never a hive of activity other than building new homes, there is a considerable downturn in trade. A number of builders have gone to the wall for one reason or another and my own trade of plumbing and heating in my own instance at least is down 50% on telephone enquiries. Blackpowder
  2. What'swrong with a hangman? Blackpowder
  3. All the best for a speedy recovery. Blackpowder
  4. Sounds like a smart ***. Blackpowder
  5. Hello Funky, That's interesting quite a rare occurance I would say. Back to the above the windows and doors are now in situ at the above site but a pigeon still came inside today, caught and released by me minus a few tail feathers. Boy did it not half go when I flung it in the air. Blackpowder
  6. Self employed : for the money, I'd rather be fishing or shooting or walking or just about anything. Blackpowder
  7. I'm with you Russ91, cant see what any of the commercial games has to do with sport anyway. Worked with an old guy once who had the opinion that it was in the Governents interst for the populace to argue about football, it kept them from thinking about how the state was currently ripping them off. 8. Run a 1977 MGB GT as daily driver for 8 years, great car and it was surprising the amount of gear which it could carry, camped and fished all over Scotland and many holidays in Lakes and NE England. It was never pampered went shooting even. Unfortunately it reched the stage where my basic skills could not keep it rust free any longer, so last year it had to go. Win the Lottery first stop another BGT perhaps with V8 motor. Blackpowder
  9. Living in the lack of luxury you say Blackbart, it will be us silly **** who work for a living footing the bill again. Blackpowder
  10. Aye, keep the heid mon. We've all been there it will come around again. Kepp throwing the lead up. Blackpowdwer
  11. Doubtless you have seen the situation Lb where you try and sneak up on a pigeon while roost shooting, no joy its off. Now see one drop into a thick fir tree, clap your hands , stamp your feet shout and bawl. It wont move. Blackpowder
  12. Many old farmbuildings and mansion houses had dovecotes to house pigeons, which could fly out and feed at will but were culled at night for human consumption. I have seen some with quite elaborate revolving gantries which might have been used to harvest eggs or squabs from the boxes. Many of todays feral pigeon must be descendents of these birds. 13. Certainly anser 2 I am seeing more pigeons on rooftops and in urban situations then I ever did in the past. See my other post re woodpigeon nesting indoors, this pair were making the usual courtship sounds on the nest site while I was banging and hammering away outside within 10 yards of them. Blackpowder
  14. Hello Samf There is or was a , "Sporting Gazette" which had a Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter editions. Perhaps this is where you saw it published. Blackpowder
  15. Hi Funky All door and window openings are formed but no windows in situ. Blackpowder
  16. Working today on an extension to a rural property in a quiet area of the Borders. Few people about and woodpigeon going back and forth from trees to gardens. However in the rafters of the property one pair of woodies are busy building a nest. How many other forum members havce encountered indoor nesting wood pigeon. Incidently as yet there are no windows or doors on the building. Blackpowder.
  17. For a boat get the best you can afford. After 20 years in the potting and charter angling job I would say equally important is practice with whatever model you choose. If for example you are among fish, lay down the rod and get tuning the set to see waht is the best possible picture you can gey of what is happening on the sea bed. IMHO fish feeding on the bottom are much more difficult to locate on a sounder than mid -water feeders. Best of luck with your purchase Blackpowder
  18. That is really tough beardy a hard blow when getting over such a serious illness. Do you have any grounds for getting your ex boss for wrongfull dismissal. I know it is hard but who knows what is round the corner, one of the bwest things that happenmed to me was getting laid off. Never looked back since as a self employed plumber. Blackpowder
  19. Same as Tony9r got laid of so set up on my own, best thing ever. Dont emply anyone and you can have shooting and fishing days of whenever the mood takes. Good luck anyway. Regards Blackpowder.
  20. And me, from the land God kept to himself after he had practiced on the rest of the world the Scottish Borders Welcome on board callant
  21. Three friwends of mine were at a keepers day on tThursday when they had what can only be decribed as a very fortunate escape from death and injury. Apparently the gamekeeper driving the multi wheel ATV tried to cross a swollen tributary of the Tweed where upon the machine turned on its side trapping one of the occupants underwater with a very large shooter on top of him. Fortunately all turned out well despite the bitter cold conditions which prevailed all survived although one person is severely bruised and may have cracked ribs. Two guns have been sent for stripping and cleaning and one cartridge bag has been lost. Crossing flooded streams-- gang warily. Blackpowder.
  22. Just looking out the window here in the Scottish Borders 12: 25 and not a breath of wind, clock calm, scarce a leaf is stirring in the witch preventing rowan. Curses it has been gales and blizzards all week, some good weather for roost shooting, birds ito wood early. Our Club roost shoots by invitation from Estates in Berwickshire and Northumberland for a ten week period starting on the first Saturday in February. These are known as Charity Shoots as part of the prioceeds from the sale of birds goes to a charity nominated by our hosts in rotation. We 've heard of rain dances, any members know a good wind dance, and I mean one unrelated to an overindulgence in beans. Blackpowder.
  23. Where did my attachments go? I'll try again. Top a London sidelock by Charles Boswell, bottom a Swedish boxlock by Husqvarna. That Husqvarna is a really fine looking gun. How does it handle? Cheers Blackpowdwer
  24. A watch, while working, while fishing, while shooting, while dressed in Sunday togs. Would consider rings and necklaces a hazard in building trade. I see very few of my fellow shooters wearing anything other than a ring. Blackpowder
  25. I am sure that going back years and years ago someone was writing in Shooting Times about curing badger meat to bacon. Have any other forum members any recollection of this?? blackpowder
