  1. Are they rooks or crows. If they are crows the best method of control is a Larsen trap, I dont know about rooks or hooded crows but certainly the carrion crow cannot abide another of the breed in its territory. Perhaps less sporting than shooting but really effective
  2. 150 for 3 of us on Sunday over spring barley, birds still there so skivving off tomorrow for another bash.
  3. On Sunday morning we watched them at their roost wood until 10 am before they started to move, then when they did it was costant.
  4. We had the second last of our Club roost shoots on Saturday one comment which has been heard this spring from several members is how early pigeon now come into roost. Once it was a case of hanging on to the last permissable moment as pigeon zipped in like stuka bombers as the last of the light faded. Noe it is all over half an hour to an hour earlier. Incidently on Sunday 3 of us shot 158 pigeon on drilled barley. Most of the birds came over up to three gunshots hight and closed their wings to drop like stones into the decoy pattern. Again this is something different as in past experience birds came in from a distance at a shallow angle. Have any other members noticed the above .
  5. Make sure you use BOILED linseed oil, first coat thinned with good quality turpentine, rub well in with the heel of the palm then keep building up allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
  6. Hello charliem658 that looks like a pretty useful hammergun you have there, what make is it?
  7. thanks mossy835 will look into that cheers Blackpowder
  8. Have been unable to find Sillosocks on any sites. Who sells them Highlander.
  9. Blackpowder, I did'nt realize that either- The pigeon guides actually pay for the land they shoot over? I thought they got it because of their availability during the week and always when required. This pigeon guiding lark seems a bit all close shop to me. Regards Starlight32 Yes starlight32 lost a place last year to a pro who was offering £15 per Gun to farmer but only for exclusive rights. I dont know how much the farm has been used by this guy as I have not been back with plenty other permissions in the locality. Other shooters I know have lost ground to this same guy under similair circumstances.
  10. You've got pm BD go and have a look mate there have been loads there If you get permission you'll owe me big time After a hiccup earlier this week due to weather conditions the pigeons are now focussed on sown fields, the trouble is there are just to many of them just now with only occasional fields having any significant flocks on them. This in south east Scotand
  11. Stand to your permissions if so called pigeon guides move into your area for one thing is sure they will try their best to squeeze everyone else out with promises of pest control and payment to landowners.
  12. NO there are plenty do gooders out there wanting to restrict our activities, let's not do it ourselves.
  13. Hello melb3 once you have had your casting instruction head for your nearest small stocked stillwater , usually proprietors will give advice on fly patterns , floating or sinking lines , and whatever is the best current tactic. Also you should be able to find some excellent DVDs, and videos on the subject. After that it is a matter of practice , practice and subscribe to a monthly trout angling mag. such as Trout Fisherman or Trout and Salmon to keep up with current trends. Tight lines from Blackpowder
  14. Thanks stuarpt will try that, perhaps I am only going through a bad patch but the wealth of knowledge on this forum makes it well worth asking.
  15. Last year I replaced my faithful T Wild hammer gun with an even older vintage Pape ejector s x s. Pheasant season went not to bad did not hit any more than usual. Roost shooting for pigeons has been a disaster with cartridge to kill ratio at around 4 to 1. On coming pigeon which are hit invariably have broken left wing. Anyone out there with a suggestion to cure this other than resorting to stock alterations. Shooting from right shoulder but it has been suggested that I may have centre vision.
  16. A large acerage of spring barley has been sown over the past week pigeons now busy on selected fields. South east Scotland
  17. could have been I suppose codling 99 but it seemed a much to tidy a kill site for charlie
  18. Roost shooting with my club yesterday and came across a typical raptor ,"kill" a circle of plucked feathers and wing remains nothing else. Light fluffy feathers and barred wing remains suggest buzzard was the victim. Gamekeeper had no sightings of anything unusual on Estate, although recent TV programme on eagle owls had them down as buzzard eaters. Would another buzzard kill and eat own species? Would be interested to hear if any members had encountered this before?
  19. re your decoys new and shiny, was it wet making them shiny or do you use flocked decoys. Dead pigeon are hard to beat as a decoy, but of course you have to shoot them first, really dedicated pigeon shooters will keep a dozen from previous outings in fridge or freezer. However when pigeon are ,'hot' on a field or particular crop they will drop in even when you are out setting up more dead birds as decoys.
  20. Do any members have a simple recipe for ,"bullshot" which does not use tins of beef consumme
  21. Do any members have hard evidence that there is a migration of woodpigeon from Scandanavian countries to the Great Britain in the winter months.
