  1. I come from the same neck of the woods as you and I haven't even seen enough pigeons to get a quarter of what you got, let alone shoot them.
  2. Hertfordshire Starts its new Firearms Amnesty next week and I was wondering what they do with all the guns handed in. Are they all scraped or some of them sold or auctioned off? If so how do you find out about where and when? https://www.herts.police.uk/advice/firearms_licensing/operation_calibre.aspx
  3. Not much in the way of pigeons in my neck of the woods. I’m hoping that the tail end of Hurricane Gonzalo might push some birds my way.
  4. I’m having no luck getting pigeons come to my decoys in the rape field. However I have shot some crossing the field from who knows where. They all had large triangle shape seed in their crops. As far as I can make out this is Buckwheat which is wild bird food. Is someone actually growing wild bird food or are the pigeons raiding a locale gamekeeper’s food store? You know I think you're right. The first photo I put up was one I found on the web. Just searched for beechmast and it looks a little more like it.
  5. These are being sold on ebay as Rare Unperforated Tax Disc
  6. My wife said the same sort of thing. She said what am I going to do what you die. I said get on the internet and find another mug like me. Her reply to that was, I cant be bothered to train up another one.
  7. My wife once ask me what i would do if I won the lottery all by myself. My reply was anything I want to.
  8. So thats where they have all gone. Got none to speak of in my part of Hertfordshire. Shooting more corvids than pigeon at moment. Anyway I hope they decoy well for you.
  9. The rape on my perm is about 5” tall already but not that many pigeons. I went for a look yesterday and scared off 30 or so, went back 30 minutes later and they had not returned. I tried putting decoys out a week or so ago and they just weren’t interested.
  10. I will soon be putting in my renewal form for my SGC/FAC Licences which are due at the end of January. If it is late coming back will I still be able to shoot or will I have to stop once it gets to the expiry date? Does anyone know what the waiting time is in Hertfordshire?
  11. You can use your .22 for pigeons-pop your Deeks about 70 yards out and use a moderator/sub combination-if you are lucky then you can have fun sniping them and kill quite a few without scaring everything for miles. You can use your .22 for pigeons-pop your Deeks about 70 yards out and use a moderator/sub combination-if you are lucky then you can have fun sniping them and kill quite a few without scaring everything for miles. I was thinking of trying this on crows now that the stubble has been ploughed in and the pigeons have gone. The only thing is there’s a lot of stones in my area so a higher chance of ricochets.
  12. Do they come on this forum? If they do how would I know?
  13. I would like to thank everybody for their help and suggestions. I feel a little more relaxed about it now. The only reason I have not use my rifle in 2 year is because I got hooked on pigeon shooting with the shotgun. The last purchased rifle ammo I got 500 rounds. If I had used them over the last 2 years it would have averaged about 20 shots per month. My plan is to buy a regular supply of ammo between now and when I renew my licence at the end of January.
  14. You have done well to decoy over new rape. I’ve tied decoying twice on my perm and the pigeons just ignored the decoys. I went a 3rd time without decoys, ended up shooting just as many.
  15. I have a shotgun and FAC licence which is up for first renewal in January. I am getting a bit concerned over 2 issues. Firstly: I have not use my rifle or purchased any ammo for it in about 2 years. Secondly and most important: As of July 2014 it states that you can’t have a licence if you have a criminal record. Over 45 years ago I got in with the wrong crowd and was prosecuted in court, once for trespass with an airgun and once for being an accomplice to a stealing. This was all declared when I first got my original licence but the now the law has changed. Has anyone been in or know of anyone who has been in this situation and sill had their licence renewed?
  16. I have the fox trap setup behind a hedge out of view. When I checked it this morning and it was empty. So it looks like I will be stuck with going there every morning until the jobs done. As some of you have said, I have not thought it through. I met the guy who lent us the trap and he advised me not to have the fox in my van that because of the smell, and I should use a trailer to transport any foxes I catch to where I can legally shoot them.
  17. We have a problem with a fox digging holes in our bowling green. I have borrowed a fox trap which turns out to be bigger and heavier than I thought, and too much for me to handle with a fox inside. Has anyone any ideas on the best way to move the fox for release at another location? Also is it legal to let it go on someone else’s land? I could just shoot it with my .22lr rimfire but the only trouble is I don’t have an open licence.
  18. Not sure what make mine is but this happened to me. It turned out to be the little grub screw that holds the arm to the motor shaft had come loose, and the shaft was just spinning in the arm.
  19. I find between 2pm and 5:30pm is my best time for decoying bean stubble. I always get to the farm about 1pm and drive from field to field looking for a plan B, just in case plan A goes tits up. No one likes the bother of having to move to another spot, but sometimes you have to.
  20. My home made timer is a bit of a lash-up. I purchased a small time circuit online, but it turned out to be either on or off and not cycle. Anyway I purchased another one the same and joined the two together. I have since found another circuit online that does on/off all in one for about £8. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CYCLIC-TIMER-SWITCH-10A-Delay-ON-Off-Switch-12V-TIME-ON-1-700s-OFF-1-300s-Repeat-/221270377713?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3384be04f1 You will need 2 wires for you battery, 2 wires for your flapper. you will also need 1 extra wire to link the battery terminal on the circuit to the middle relay terminal.
  21. My old timer packed up, so I decided to put together one of my own that is adjustable. At the moment I have it flapping for 7 seconds and stopped for 5 second. Does anyone know how long I should have it flapping and stopped for to get the best results?
  22. Hi maskedhunter’ I just thought that this might help you. http://www.hawkeoptics.co.uk/brc.html It will tell you how much you pellet drops and the power loses by the time it hits the target. You need to pre-set it for your air gun and scope height.
  23. They say that 300yards is safe for a 12g shotgun. A field 300 yards x 300 yards = 90000 sq yd which is about 18 acres. This is based on the field being square. In theory your field could be 300yds x 100yds = 6 acres and you could still shoot, as long as you keep the shot inside your area.
