  1. Post script: I finally got around to shooting this gun yesterday (I've been a bit busy...). Reasonable scores on clays (for me), but the stock is working loose. Tightening the action screws helped slightly, but there is still an appreciable rocking movement up and down. I suspect this may be due to the wood at the stock head having swollen by being soaked in oil, and soaking all the oil residues out has caused some shrinkage. I like to think I know when I'm out of my depth, so regrettably, it will have to be a trip to see a professional, as per the Gospel of St Harold.
  2. It works well - it will hold 15 or so empties before it needs tipping out. The fore and aft positioning is surprisingly sensitive to loads - 32g loads need the bag 1/2" further forward than 28g. This probably means I made the bag mouth too narrow! I have to say I like the design of the magnetic catcher, although the front mounting looks as if it would occlude the bolt release button. I also need to find a couple of places on the side of the action body thick enough to take an M4 tapped hole, so I'm thinking about this one...
  3. All the metal bits are alloy, and the plate is thin - the rigidity comes from the shape. The goat skin is also very thin, less than 1mm. The first attempt was much heavier! Also have to admit I didn't include the weight of the rail - I don't know how much that weighs, although probably not much.
  4. It actually looks a bit like a ghost ring sight in use - I'm looking through it, so not really conscious of it being in the way. It's not ideal, hence the interest in the magnetic jobbie, but it does work (15 bunnies for 18 cartridges last time out). As for the extra weight, again I don't really notice it, the gun being a heavy old brute to start with!
  5. That looks brilliant! A large magnet on a steel plate braced out from the action - wish I'd seen this before I made the other one. Hmmm,,,, I have some large chunks of magnet and some 1mm plate...(wanders off to workshop)
  6. Oh, and it mounts/dismounts in seconds, and the plate lives inside the catch bag.
  7. The problem I found with this was holding a catch bag far enough from the ejection port to allow the bolt to operate, and to drop a cartridge into the chamber. Disclaimer: my solution may not suit everyone - you may think it ridiculous, ugly, or ridiculously ugly, but it works for me. It sits on my Baikal MP153, so I won't be surprised, or offended, if the opinion is expressed that it couldn't get any uglier... I had a Weaver/Picatinny rail fitted, then added a couple of quick-release sling swivel mounts, replacing the swivel bolt with a flathead screw in each. The alloy deflector plate is mounted on these, and the catch bag hangs on a frame on the end of the plate. The bag is made from some goatskin left over from an armour project, and the whole thing weighs under 3 ounces. The hollow centre of the mounts allows me to look straight through without interfering to much with the sight picture, and for lamping rabbits off a truck, with a light clamped under the barrel, it works fine. Wouldn't want to walk far carrying it, but horses for courses - it soaks recoil up like a sponge from any load suitable for bunnies.
  8. "Get away from her, you BITCH!"
  9. This should get you a bit closer: https://www.cromwell.co.uk/shop/160202/ground-flat-stock hth
  10. I note that they intend to ban the private ownership of *automatic* and semi-automatic firearms. Nice to see they have read up on the current legal situation...
  11. I visited Tyne Cot cemetery and the Menin Gate when I was in Belgium a couple of years ago with our Scout troop. The cemetery was quite emotional, but what really got me was standing under the gate, reading the names of the missing dead with my son, and finding his name up there, or at least someone with the exact same name, who died aged 19, only five years older than Rob was at the time...
  12. Only illegal if you don't have a valid reason for having it with you.
  13. Ah ok, thanks. That would explain why the bolts in deac'd rifles have big chunks ground off them.
  14. Or a Smith and Wesson pistol chambered for 9 mm Luger? And he had a bolt only for an Enfield rifle? Is that a controlled component?
  15. Whereabouts are you? (can't see location in mobile version)
  16. Ok, the pics show up in the Management's MacBook... Very nice job, especially for a first one - waaaaaay better than my first Looking forward to seeing the sheath. And now, the crit: Finish nice, the oil finish looks good, and you haven't rushed through the grits when smoothing down. Minor quibble on fit: Fit is generally good, but I'm guessing you didn't have a Corby drill bit, as there appears to be a bit of dipping in the walnut at the boundary between the woods and the bolts. If (when!) you do another, it would be worth investing the £5 or so in the proper drill bit, as it makes it much easier to get the holes right, in terms of diameter, depth and step profile. Handle shape looks comfortable for serious work, and you have chosen a sensible blade shape size. All in all, a very creditable job. Ref johnphilip's comment above, I'd give it 6 months, tops, before you start making another one...
  17. Dammit! Still can't see photos :( I'll have a look on the pc...
  18. Excellent job! Please let us know how it shoots
  19. With a"first past the post" voting system, yes it is. Unfortunately, as the system most benefits the large parties who get to form governments, they have the least incentive to move towards something fairer, like STV. It also means that a few thousand swing votes in marginal constituencies will effectively decide the election. So a couple of votes for ukip in a marginal might just allow the Ed-squared fiasco into Downing Street :( See the quote: "Democracy is the worst possible system of government, apart from all the others."
  20. Even more so if they only get to form a govt with SNP and/or Green collusion :(
  21. That was Betta-Bilda! Blue plastic bolts and red plastic nuts? Also had cogs, bevel gears and a worm gear. Happy days
