Please excuse my ignorance, can anyone tell me the best way to set up my manual pigeon flapper? It's a Sportplast pigeon decoy with flapping wings (manual cord pull). I got it yesterday from Uttings and hope to use it on Monday. Also can anyone recommend some good but cheap decoys? Cheers everyone

Hi everyone, I needed some new pegs for my shell decoys, and decided to try making a few myself. I had the materials lying around in the garage (garden canes, pop rivets, superglue and kitchen towel) but I'm guessing that each one of these costs something less than 20p to make. A wee 4mm drill hole through the shell's back receives the pop rivet with enough room to let the decoy bounce just a little in the breeze. A wee coat of matt grey spray paint should stop the rivet from flashing in the sunlight. I'm sure I won't be the first person who's come up with this, but quite pleased with the idea. Will try them out on Wednesday.

Hi all, I wonder if I might ask for a little help with a few decoying issues which I'm having. I'm an experienced shooter but most of my pigeon shooting has always been roost shooting or flight lining and decoying is fairly new to me. I've been shooting pigeons on two fields, one of newly drilled game crop seeds and one of drilled barley. At first the old strip of game crop still ran along the middle of the field and made building a hide near the feeding area easy and I had some good shooting. This has now been ploughed up and the pigeons are still feeding on the seed but there is nowhere nearby to build a hide where it won't stick out like a sore thumb. Does this matter? I remember reading that Archie Coates said it wasn't good to have a hide in open ground but other people seem to say it doesn't matter? The second issue which I'm having is when shooting over the drilled barley. There are always lots of birds on the ground when I arrive, but once I've built my hide and set out the decoys the birds will not come back into the field. It's not that they're seeing the pattern and shying away as if there is something wrong with it, they are just flying over without showing the least sign of interest in the pattern whatsoever. There is conifer wood across the road behind the area where I have to set up and I get occasional shots as they make their way into that, but they will not come back into the field. I only have shell decoys at the moment, which I couple with some dead birds. Would a flapper or a rotary make a big difference in pulling the birds off of their flightpath or might I be doing something fundamentally wrong? Thanks very much for your patience with a beginner! Hi all, Went shooting last weekend decoying over oilseed rape. However only left with 5 birds. There just weren’t any in the sky overhead. Any reason for this? It was about 6 degrees and clear sky with sun shining, light breeze. Is it the time of year? Am I better off shooting over the grass field behind the two rapeseed fields? I was shooting the traditional horseshoe pattern. Thanks for any advice/tips

decided to have a walk with a very good freind today who in all honesty hasnt quite been himself lately due to he's nearest and dearest being diagnosed with dimentia. i called him (tony) this morning and asked if he fancied a walk around the local land i shoot,, tony not being a shooter didnt realy fancy it untill i told him it was just a walk and i wouldnt be taking any guns just the dog , he agreed so off we went.stopping on the way to watch numerous farmers out with the combines i knew or at least thought an enjoyable day was to be had and only hoping the farms i shoot had started, however after arriving at one of the places i shoot ,,nothing happening so thought the best thing i can do is walk the hedgerows ,which we did. after an hour or so walking we headed back to my landrover when tony said Robert that gate is open ,to my ignorance i told him i could'nt see that far,on approaching i then noticed the back door of my vehicle was open and guessed in one my decoying stuff gone!!! livid at the fact i immediately phoned the police and gave all details to be told stay with the vehicle we will have someone there straight away.. bearing in mind tis was just after 2pm waited and waited and waited at 6pm called them bk to be told that the officer issued with the ticket was now off duty and would be contacting me tommorrow,, my reply was so you want me to wait here in the middle of no where untill tommorow, the ladies reply no get yourself home theres not a lot we can do unless you know whos taken your stuff ( if i knew that i wouldnt be phoning them id be getting my stuff back ). so now its wait untill tommorrow. amongst the stuff taken was 4 hidepoles, a bag full of hide netting 2 bouncers and 41 decoys every decoy was marked on the underside with my initials. devastated is not the word, as the time and money its cost me to build up my gear has gone in the blink of an eye. so now its buying yet again so if any of you guys have or know of any cheap decoys please let me know as i,m now desperate and need to fullfill my prommise to fellow pw members who i have prommised to take out. soorry for the rant guys !

I have done a bit of decoying before but only ever with static decoys. Now the opportunity has come up that i will be able to do some more especially over winter on oil seed rape etc. I am looking to buy either a flapper or a rotary decoy as with so much 'food' around for the pigeon, I expect I will need movement to bring them in. Could you please help me with this decision. Giving reasons for each and where you can buy good ones that don't cost an arm and a leg....... Any other advice on shooting pigeons over oil seed rape in winter would also be very helpful!!! Many thanks
