TonySmith
I need some info please on 12g Single Trigger S/S makes, I have done a search and could only find a Gunmark Berri, and Beretta of course, which is a bit out the price range. The ‘Baikal Kid’ wants to upgrade to 2 barrels, he keeps going on about Lanber and Browning 12g OU’s… as plucky as he is, I know he will not be able to handle the weight of a 12g OU over a days shooting. Looking at few AYA’s I feel the lad could handle those gun weights, it’s just the Twin Triggers I want to eliminate to keep everything simple for him. Thanks Tony ( The Baikal Kid official sponsor)

George1990
Just looked in Sporting Gun as I remembered seeing one in there, but it's over £1000 2nd hand . It's a Fabarm Classis, only in 20 bore.
Delbert
If all else fails Baikal predictably make a s/s sst , SKB model 385,485 (no longer made) Zabala I think Gunmark also did a Kestrel. I have always maintained though the double triggers may take a couple of outings to get used to they do the job just as well as a single trigger once that honeymoon period is over. Markio
I have to say that having just picked up the double trigger s/s the two triggers didn't really cause me a problem on my first outing, no more than remembering to cycle a pump action compared to a Semi Auto. However, the auto safety, now that ****** me up plenty of times! To be honest i actually really enjoy the double triggers, it gives an extra fun element to firing the gun. That's what owning a pump action taught me, it's not always about the art/skill of shooting and making contact with the bird but the pleasure in firing different configuration guns. clayman
The implication of the request to find a SST rather than a DT is that the lad tends to fire off two barrels every time in quick succession, suggesting that some lessons in good technique might be better than spending extra on an SST. The game gun has two triggers for a very good reason. Its a DOUBLE GUN. If this concept is understood and used in the field, the D/T is superior for game shooting to the SST, which is developed for competition clays. Consider this. I have two single barreled set choke guns. One has a No 4 36g Magnum in it as I might see quarry at 40yds +, or a big fox at range. I also have an open choked single with some 30g Pigeon specials in it, good for closer vermin etc, and won't destroy anything closer I want to eat. So, out I go with both guns, and a quarry presents, but I've got the wrong gun in my hand, and no time to change, so I take a pop shot with an inappropriate load and either miss or destroy the meat for the pot as a result. By the time I've changed guns its to late, game has gone. Solution would be to have BOTH guns in may hand at the same time, and some brilliant soul came up with the idea of the DOUBLE gun to do just that. I now have this thing called a D/T S/S. Its light for carrying, has two differently choked barrels, and I can load two different loads. Now when Mr Fox pops his head I can present BOTH guns in one and take my finger quickly to the appropriate trigger and therefore barrel for the right choke and load. If you stop thinking of the game gun as a two-shot gun, and instead as two guns side by side, which you aim to use as an optimum single shot to kill, guns the way you use your D/T will transform. For an SST to get the same barrel choice you have to know which barrel you have set, and if necessary move over the barrel selector. Actually, to optimise the S/S, this is MORE complicated than simply going to the right trigger. The aim is NOT to fire off two barrels at anything that moves, thats just a waste of cartridges and demonstrates poor shooting ability. Instead think in terms of optimum barrel choking and load for what presents, and first shot is for that. If the second barrel is used, it should either be on a second presentation or only as a reserve. The SST S/S has been developed and is sold to competition clay people who want a S/S for specialist competition or personal reasons, and for those few game shooters who want to be able to use both barrels in quick succession every time they shoot, but the latter are loosing in that process one of the major advantages of the double gun. Two different chokes and loads, and choose instantly with your finger which barrel to fire.

TonySmith
Thanks Gents for your replies and advice, and thank you Clayman for taking the time out for compiling a very comprehensive and definitive answer. I have learnt a lot from that,It has certainly made me re-think the path I would like the 'Baikal Kid' to take. I spent a fair while trawling the net today looking for SST's, but few and far between, what there was had a hefty price to go with it. Some private one to one tuition on my permission with 'Claymans Guide' and a SS/DT should see the 'Baikal Kid' develop nicely. clayman
In choosing your gun the most important aspect is the balance. This consideration should override all other. The lad will be able to handle with confidence a gun balanced for his stature, and with that confidence to control the gun will come the ability to take single shots that are effective, so optimising the use of the DT. I'm in Surrey and specialise in gun fit and choice advice. Just a visit here for a 1/2hr static fit and stance and mount advice with guns you have and some from my stock to educate is no obligation and free. With private lesson facilities nearby, and do what I describe as dynamic gun fit lessons, which combine getting the right gun type, balance and fit, with sound technique. The right gun is no good if held and used wrongly, but a person with good technique can effectively use just about any gun they can mount.
