Frenchieboy
We had our residents Christmas Party last night and the red wine was flowing a treat, so much so that I decided that the best course of action this morning was to get out in the fresh air for a while armed with my 17HMR and my camera. On arrival at the farm I could see half a dozen rabbits running about in the top field but, as last night was quite a heavy one I thought I would start in the lower part of the farm. Had been out for about 15 minutes when this chap decided to sit up with his back to me about 85 yards away. Well, with such a perfect target what could I do, I aimed directly between the ears and gave the trigger a gentle squeeze. I'm sure that moderator of mine is not normally that noisy but maybe it was partly to do with the head feeling a bit "fuzzy" but I certainly heard it. Mind you the rabbit didn't hear a thing, it just did a full summersault and landed head first in the snow! It was only when I picked the rabbit up that I realised exactly how much damage a 17 HMR Remington 17gr can do, there was hardly a mark where the bullet entered between the ears but when I lifted it from the snow I found that half of the side of the rabbits head was missing. (I did take a close up picture of where the part of the head was nissing but decided not to poast it as it is extremely graphic and may offend any visitors to the fourm) The first photo shows the "good side of the rabbit, the second shows the damage done and the others are just general views of the permission with the snow starting to fill the skys. They were taken at about 12 noon, it's now 13.00 and the snow has started falling that heavily visibility is down to about 15 yards outside our window, and I think it's going to get even heavier. Happy Christmas to All!

SSS
Surprising how much energy the little hmr round transfers and this proves it. good shooting and a nice snowy walk out
Frenchieboy
I thought it was a pretty good shot (85 yards clean, quick and humane head shot) but it is a shame someone else didn't. I have just received a PM from a member who thinks it was very unsporting of me (Quote) to go out and shoot the poor rabbit that was trying to survive out in the snow instead of staying at home to nurse my hangover (End quote) I don't know if I am missunderstanding things but i thought this forum was about going out hunting and shooting live quarry with guns, or am I mistaken? I agree, a very good kill, quick and humane. What more can you ask for?
Frenchieboy
Here's a copy of the PM that was sent to me. I have chosen to not include the name of the sender but have advised them that they might be better joining the Barby Doll Forum until they have an understanding of shooting forums. thats a very distasteful picture you posted, well i think so anyway. that rabbit had a nice sporting chance didnt he! perhaps you should have nursed your hangover in the house, instead of going out and doing that on the bunny struggling to survive in the snow

I think that one is a very dead rabbit, good shooting. A walk with the gun always clears my head, i usally go for the 22 lr its a bit quieter. Frenchieboy
Agreed Rimfire, the .22 is much quieter for rabbits and would normally be my choice of rifle, especially when "on the lamp" but I am waiting to get another .22LR which isn't going to happen till the New Year so at the moment I am restricted to the 17HMR, which I love using. Frenchieboy
Thanks for all the compliments guys. It was one of my better shots considering how much red wine I had last night! I still think that moderator of mine wasn't working properly this morning though, my eye blaas fair rattled when I took the shot! Just as a foot note, it's just about blizzard conditions here right now so I'm settling down on the sofa with a glass of JD! You all take care and have a good one. Jim Sarakun
Looks like the mods have taken off your thread re; your unsporting email. I sometimes wonder why threads are removed, some are fairly obvious, most are not. To me anyway. I do try to get my head round what is and what is not politically correct, lewd or for what ever reason a post is removed, after all, we all have different ideas about what is or is not acceptable, consequently, interpreting the rules slightly differently to another member. This is the country that is renowned the world over for freedom of speech, or has that changed now? If so, no one told me.. Maybe a reason for the removal would help us all understand more clearly so that we do not post similar material. I enjoy shooting, and have been blessed with the killer instinct, of which I have no control over, as it has been passed down to me through my genes by my forefathers from the hunter gatherer days. I would say most members on this forum also have these genes. I have learnt not to use the word "sporting" any more, and have substituted this with "pest control". So, bearing in mind that this site is Global, I must commend you on an excellent example of "pest control". I too feel your sorrow for taking the life of that poor little cuddly fluffy animal, but the world needs feeding and somebody has to do it. Just ignore the thankless e mails you get from the lesser mortals who do not understand and do not possess the genes you have been burdened with, and instead revel in the knowledge that you are one of the chosen ones. Chosen to purge the planet of the vermin that compete with us for our daily bread. Sadly, I too have taken the lives of countless Pigeons and some poor fluffy bunnies this week, may the lord rest their souls, and am booked in for therapy next week to help me overcome my pain for taking their lives. Frenchieboy
Jim, I recieved a PM from the mods explaining why the trhead had been removed. Evidentally we are not allowed to divulge the contents of PMs on open forum without the senders permission. I can understand the reason for this and except the explanation. I have however sent a PM to the sender of the original PM suggesting that they put their brain in gear before sending out similar PMs in the future! p.s. I love rabbit stew and guess what I have for my dinner tomorrow? Edited December 20, 2009 by Frenchieboy

I needed to clear it from lack of sleep because of my 17 day old keeping us up most of the night.
