The past three christmases I've got bored and taken a shotgun out for a walk after the presents and lunch; it's not much fun for me sitting drinking and eating mince pies for the sake of it, I'd rather be out shooting!

Trouble is, I've heard somewhere this year that it's illegal to shoot on christmas day :) I'm only after vermin but I'd preffer to know I'm the right side of the law

Shooting GAME on Christmas Day is NOT legal. As for pigeons, vermin etc. I'm not sure, but it does feel like an un Christian thing to do, especially when we have Boxing Day tomorrow.

By all means go for a good walk, take a stick, enjoy the day, and look forward to tomorrow. I am.

Cranfield, I think you've dropped your guard.

"No game (including hare) may be shot in any county on any Sunday or on Christmas day.

Before the passing of the wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Orders prohibiting the shooting of wildfowl on Sundays could be made under the provisions of sections 2 and 13 of the Protection of Birds Act 1954. Although Sunday Orders can still be made under Section 2 (3), none have been made. However, some Sunday Orders made prior to the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 have not been repealed and are still in existence. They have the effect of making it illegal to shoot wildfowl on a Sunday in the following counties (or parts of counties in existence before the 1974 re-organisation):"

I recently contacted sarah bann..(basc.org) and poped the question covering

this subject, and this is what she sent me as there answer:

"if any person whatsoever shall kill or take any game,or use any dog, gun, net,or other engine or instrument for the purpose

of killing or taking any game,on a sunday or christmas day, such person shall,on conviction thereof before two justices of the peace, forfeit and pay for evrey such offence such sum of money, not exceeding('F1'LEVEL 1 on the standard scale.)

the game Act 1831 extends to england and wales but not scotland

or northen ireland.

If you really fancy shooting something why don`t you just shoot some cans or something, that way you can`t get in trouble.

I think you should be fine for vermin, but like others have said, today would be a nice break for them.

Ill tell you what is funny tho, a lot of folk on here is on about "this is a family day spend it together" but yet they are on the internet posting.

Any ways Merry Christmas, I just had a wee look on here as I was sending a e-mail.

Please read - http://www.basc.org.uk//en/departments/gam...ing-seasons.cfm

Can't believe a some on here don't know the restrictions applied to shooting :good:

Cranfield you should be ashamed

I am not sure why I should be ashamed, check out what I posted.

I am almost certain that there is no restriction on shooting anything on Christmas Day, unless it falls on a Sunday (then you have the Game restriction).

All a matter of personal choice.

The only reason I stated, "I am almost certain......" , is because I was too busy to look up the relevant legal references to support my statement.

Anyway, why go out on Christmas day to shoot something. Give the birds/mammals a break for at least one day of the year and enjoy the company of others and the festivities.
