Bloke
I submitted my app for a SGC on 12th Nov last year. As there was going to be a need for a medical report I knew it may be a while. anyway, in less than a week, the FEO popped in for the requisite chat - Top Bloke , and the interview went fine. He said he had no problem with granting SGC depending on medical report. A phone call early to mid December confirmed that the medical report was waiting with the rest of the papers on the FEO managers desk for reading (and hopefully granting). rang them a week ago and was told that obviously they had Christmas off and the manager had just got back from sick. The secretary was hoping she would get round to the SGC's that day and she would ring me to let me know to get a cabinet installed etc. It wouldn't be so bad if they would tell me what the Doc said, anyway he seemed ok when I discussed it with him and he knows I will give him **** if I've paid £25 for a critical report Today, still no word and I know that it won't just take a couple of days to install cab and revisit etc, but I was hoping to have all the SGC bits finished for Newark Game fair. Am I being a bit unreasonable to expect this fast a service and chase them up? I don't want to ****off my FEO and to be fair, they are always OK on the phone. Maybe I am being impatient. Any (sane) suggestions?
Gordon R
Wait. It's not lightning service, but there have been reasons for the delay.
JonD
My application required the same and took 4 months in total. If a medical report is required the Police have to pay for it so i don't get the £25 charge, personally it was my GP and surgery that caused the delay. I would call the surgery asking when they recieved the request, when it was returned, that will give you an idea as to when and if the FEO has got it back yet. Jon. apache
You have the right to see a copy of the doctors report. They may make a small charge copying it.
Bloke
The GP said that I had to pay for the report not the police, so I paid , on 3rd December . I know the medical report was back with the police waiting for reading by the middle of the second week of December and it has apparently been sat on the desk since then! As I say, the FEO dept have been great and if it takes time, it takes time, I don't want to be a ****. But I know from personal experience of govt service that the approval may have been given and the secretary may just have not got round to ringing me, The inspecting FEO said they had had some problems in the past with temp staff. jimmyb79
There wouldn't be any harm in ringing the firearms department admin guys rather than the FEO themselves and asking what the current status of it is. (You may be a bit concerned that it may have gone missing in the post etc.) They'll normally be able to tell you how much longer you'll have to wait. mpk
Hello i used to live in lincoln and when applying for my sgc my current force needed some info from lincoln constabulary. It took about 3 weeks to get the info so i think they are generlay slow . I phoned once a week to check up on it and once they had the info from lincoln it took a matter of days to be posted . A polite phone call never hurts

I think your GP will be busy enough and wont appreciate your call. Id leave it and stop being so impatient; no point p1ssing him/her off and getting an unfavourable medical report and no SGC. Bloke
Thanks guys for all the info. I think I will make a polite inquiry tomorrow to the secretary. As I say, I don't mind too much if it takes a while to send, but just to let me know if it is granted, as I have mates keeping guns/etc back in case, but no sense in even looking if SGC is turned down. I don't think it should be a problem, I have no mental health problems/history, but sometimes people get a bit lary of other diagnosis. Any (sane) suggestions? Makes my application seem swift! Surely you checked when he visited the possible locations for the cab? I fitted mine in about an hour its not hard 4 Rawl bolts into wall 2 coach screws into floor. Helps if you know what your doing and have the tools i used the same bolts we use for hadnging 50"+ plasmas to walls. 4 M8 x 75mm "sheild Anchors" and 2 M8x50mm Coach screw (the anchors need a proper hole coach screw just a pilot. Once i had fitted it Rang FEO and he came round that afternoon. Whole process from posting form to getting SGC took 7-8weeks IIRC and i was slow to get cab fitted due to work. covlocks
The FEO would have normally given you his business card when he came to see you first time around. Given the amount of time you are within your rights to phone him direct and ask what has happened - however, if you havent even fitted your cabinet yet you havent fullfilled the criteria to get a SGC, so what are you waiting for? The SGC or a phone call saying you can have one WHEN you have had another visit confirming that you have it installed? If you do not have a mental health problem, a criminal record, have people in you house with a criminal record or live in very open shared accomadation there very very few other reasons why your SGC should not be granted. Fit the cabinet and phone the FEO to come and have a look - its still going to take another 7-10 days minimum before you get the SGC in your hands even after that visit. Terrierist
Looking back on the replies, it seems to me your Doc has had a double nibble of the cherry!! Rotter!! The police do indeed ask for a medical report and it IS paid by the police themselves, not you!! My app took 3 months, start to finish, if you have any problems, try getting in touch with the firearms department at BASC, very friendly, very helpful people, most of them are ex Police so know the job inside out. Good luck Kev
Bloke
Thanks for all the replies The reason I haven't got my cabinet is that I don't want to spend more money until they confirm that they will actually grant the SGC. I rang the secretary again and she couldn't reassure me on this. I am a cancer patient in remission and I also have an inner ear problem, which causes me occasional dizzy spells, hence the need for medical report. The dizziness is well under control, and anyway, it is never bad enough that I could not unload a gun, step away from the stand and place the gun somewhere safe, it is more like a bad travel sickness episode , and i get up to an hours notice of an attack, but of course I understand why they want to cross the i's and dot the t's. They were not amused that my GP had charged me for the medical report and asked me to email a copy of my receipt and a letter from me explaining further my medical state, which I did, at least the Gp has not been double billing apparently! (Mind you they didn't offer to reimburse me and I didn't want to push my luck ) Apparently they are snowed under, she said they have between 5 and 10 thousand renewals this year in Lincolnshire alone! Seems like a lot, but it is a big area, and that could be both SGc and FAC's. Anyway the bottom line is still patience, keep waiting. terence
Dosent it say on forms 10 to 12 weeks
Mungler
Get on the phone to them and kick up merry hell. Tell them if they don't pull their fingers out your coming down there to crack some skulls and kick some ***. That'll do the trick. Or you could just wait the prescribed time of between 10 and 12 weeks and leave them to get on with it.

Bloke
Well, after moaning like **** to my daughter this evening ref this, I got a phone call at 7:40p.m! I didn't realise the FEO's worked that late! Anyway as I said earlier, he's a top bloke and he told me the SGC had been approved and he could not understand why it had taken so long. He seemed to think it is now around 6 weeks, so there is hope for everyone yet. Now I have to urgently get a cabinet, as he is coming on Monday morning to finalise this , so Ihave to go round all the local RFD's and see what stock of cabinets they have, no time to shop around unfortunately. Thanks to everyone for the advice and support, looks like I am on my way now. Good luck to all the others waiting, I hope your certs come through soon Edited February 21, 2010 by Bloke
Bloke
Well, the Cabinet is in, I picked up a top line Brattonsound 4/5gun cabinet with internal ammo safe (the last 4/5 they had in) and it is fitted to the wall and solid! Hopefully all will be OK Monday and serious shopping will ensue at the Newark show next Sunday
