reaper6
Cigarettes were a big part of life in the 70s. People smoked them in large numbers. They also started to kick the habit in large numbers too. To give up or not, and to inhale or not, were big topics of conversation. In 1969, Embassy Filter was the most popular brand. It had been introduced in 1962 and took a staggering 24% of the cigarette market in 1968. By 1971 though, it was knocked off the top spot by Players No 6. In 1972 these brands (below) made up 94% of all cigarettes sold (in order of tar content, lowest first): •Silk Cut (filter) •Consulate Menthol (filter) •Cadets (filter) •Piccadilly De Luxe (filter) •Cambridge (filter) •Embassy Gold (filter) •Embassy Regal (filter) •Sovereign (filter............................ugh......ugh....... •Sterling (filter) •Player's No 6 Virginia (filter) •Park Drive (filter) •Kensitas (filter) •Embassy (filter) •Gold Leaf Virginia (filter) •Player No 6 (plain) •Player's Weights (plain) •Albany (filter) •Woodbine (plain)....................mmmmmmmmmmmmmm •Player's No 10 Virginia (filter) •Guards Tipped (filter) •Benson & Hedges King Size (filter) •Senior Service (plain) •Player's Navy Cut (plain).............blow your head offf...... •Park Drive (plain) •Rothman's King Size (filter)

Beardo
Marlboro reds, then Lucky Strikes, then Marlboro Lights smoked from 86 to 97 Marlboro used to run some good competitions every year and if you saved foils you could get stuff - still got some nice bags. One year i won the big competition - 2 tickets to america for 2 weeks, with $2000 spending money - had a fantastic time driving up the west coast on highway

Beardo
the irony of that competition was i had to write a tie-breaker. why do you want to be in marlboro country... well it got me thinking - marlboro are all about being American and the American way (and Americans love cheese), so... I'd like to be in Marlboro country, so i could stand at the top of a mountain, look up to the sky, outstretch my arms and shout at the top of my voice "it's good to be alive!" i've actually got a video of me doing that, then crying with laughter. gave up smoking a year later, and never wanted one since. Axe
I started in the 80's and the order went something like: Embassy JPS Black Peter Stuyvesant Super Kings Rothman's Marlborough B&H Then I switched to Tobacco: Drum Golden Virginia Edit: I tried all sorts to give up in the 90's and early 2000's, will power, acupuncture, patches, gum, patches again and finally Alan Carr's book. Smoke free now and glad.

holly
SEEING A PATTERN HERE........... TOBBACO BEFORE U PACK IN think it was to do with the cost more than anything else it was for me at the time of stopping i was smoking 40 a day and cause i had a supply of cheap baccy it was only costing £1 a day
Axe
Its funny but I seemed less susceptible to colds and flu's when I switched to hand rolling tobacco. It doesn't contain all the added chemicals they put in taylor made fags. Not that it makes them any less harmful. I sure noticed the price difference though. Not sure how much I could attribute 'baccy' to quitting though trying to roll a fag in wind or with wet/cold hands, in the dark, whilst drunk , etc. was a nightmare and spitting out threads of tobacco or trying to pull the fag from your mouth when it's stuck to your lip without pulling the skin off..... You get the idea.
Imperfection
I started off chuffing on B&H then moved onto Lambert & Butler then when their quality went right down hill (kept finding bits of wood in the fags) shifted to Embassy No1. I quit nearly 4 years ago,but do admit to liking Embassy No1 even though they're crippingly expensive.Silky smooth ciggie.
rayo
When I was at high school in the early 70s the corner shops near the school used to sell single cigs out of a 20 pack we used to ask for a" separate " and a match . Don't suppose there's much of that happening these days

Bloke
Started in the Boy Scouts at about 13 - Old Holborn Roll-ups in liquorice paper, moved on to Silk Cut and B&H if I was flush, with occasional Capstan Full Strength to remind my lungs who was boss ! 30+ years later, I finished on Richmond menthol king size. Stopped by using nicorette inhalator and locking myself in the house for a week (mind you, the chest infection helped :o ) You know how it is, you wish you never started etc, etc, but I really liked smoking , not PC I know. Still, £40 a week pays toward the shooting fees ^_^ :o Edited January 26, 2010 by Bloke
