Starman
Well at last my new pup has been born. I have been waiting about 9 months and still haven't thought of a name. Only got about two months left before I can bring her home so I need to get my finger out. My question is this. I have been told that you should give dogs names with two syllables to make it easier for them to learn their name and if the second is a vowel sound then even better. E.G. Arnie would be easier to learn than Rex. Is there any truth in this? Does it really matter?

Lloyd90
Dont worry mate. You always just end up shouting "OI" anyways Obviously its easier to keep it simple. Called my Lab bitch Skye.
Starman
Perhaps I should just call her Oi from the start.
Fatcatsplat
Well, through no fault of my own, my Clumber is called Beryl. As name's go, it's fairly gay, so i tend to use the whistle a lot, but when i do use her name, the two syllables do come out strongly

I take a pragmatic view quickly climb out of a steep valley so you are fighting for breath and call your dogs name and a command if you don't collapse in a heap then you are on the money. Just for what its worth my gundogs have been called Fern , Scout , Spinner , Ace , and Remington (Remy) they all knew who they were though Remy is of "the who me?" persuasion until I get on his case. (BTW if you do frequent steep valleys a whistle takes far less breath to operate than calling)
Beretta28g
I have a Bo ESS, Rusty IWS, Pip ESS, TipsyIWS, Trout Lab, Conger ESS. Mind you they all answer to the whistle, and also *************** Beretta

mr lee
Had to have a short quick name for our new pup Fynn. He's registered with the ISDS (International sheep dog society) They won't accept long names or names that can't be pronounced sharp and quick when needed to call the dog back or make him stop what he is doing asap. http://www.isds.org.uk/society/dog_registr.../dog_names.html No idea what pup you are getting or exactly what it will be used for but surely the principle is the same? Starman
That's interesting that the ISDS basically only allow one syllable. The pup is another toller and I hope to train her for field work and agility. Neither will be at a particularly good level but it will be a bit of fun for me and the rest of the family and the other dogs. The short list of names are Splash, Comet, Lunar. Ember and Amber but it could be anything still at the moment.
mr lee
That's interesting that the ISDS basically only allow one syllable. One bonus is it stopped my kids wanting to call him 'Hanna montana' regardless of the fact he's not a bitch and the youngest wanted to call him 'spongebob'. :o
Starman
:o My brother-in-law let his young daughter name their terrier and their foal. The dog was Tinky Winky and the horse was Dipsy. When they took the dog out Mark would rarely call it back if there were people about :o We bought the horse from him a few years later and immediately changed her name to Tora.
