ME
I keep catching our terrier cross puppy (16 weeks) biting / eating his poop. Is this due to some type of dietary deficiency or just because he is experimenting ?

debaser
I keep catching our terrier cross puppy (16 weeks) biting / eating his poop. Is this due to some type of dietary defiency or just because he is experimenting ? My German Shepherd used to do this, but just stopped after a few months. I researched it and got lots of different opinions. However the bottom line is there is no definitive answer, sorry. I would just try correcting him when you catch him at it and maybe upping his food if he's emptying his bowl. I still can't get my girl to stop eating chicken poo though! Cheers, Dan
fortune82
My cocker likes to eat a nice juicy sheeps poo or cow pat! Apparently its good for them! Hes never eaten a dog poo though
chris o
watched crufts and a vet on there said pineapple dont work and recommend using a ball or a treat to bring them away from the poo. and praise them when they come away.
Mungler
Our cocker used to do it if she had something special the day before - like she wanted another go at it. She also developed a taste for fox poo The only thing you can do is watch them like a hawk when they go outside / on a walk and as soon as they look like they are going in for a nibble run at them and shout and make them understand it's not a good thing. It didn't take ours long to pack it in, and after a while they know it's not something you want them to do. Now if I just see the dog even eyeing up a poo I can call her or catch her eye and immediately she will crouch down and go submissive like she's just had her mind read and been rumbled. Raja Clavata
Yep, same here, my GSP pup ate his own, horse manure, fox poo and on one occasion barfed human excrement over the lounge carpet which he must have picked up over the local country park :yp: Fortunately he's now limiting himself to just rolling in fox poo. I suspect yours will grow out of it too.
hookbones
as has been said some just do n the worst part is once a turdchomper alwys a turdchomper. iv laughed as my sister-in-law has chased lil bailey round as hes scoffed what can best be described as another dogs jumbo sausage as fast as he can! he dont eat his own just every other dogs and cats offerings seem to be a prized delicacy.. then he wants to share the wealth by licking peoples faces :yp: :look:
WGD
A not uncommon trait, hard to cure and absolutely disgusting. He might grow out of it but I wouldn't hold my breath... or maybe I would, no pun intended.
Fatcatsplat
My staff is coming up 14 (might actually be 15 - I've lost count) and she still has a little truffle munch every now and then - Always has done - I fear that she is a habitual turdchomper as Hookbones has described. However, my clumber pup did have a go initially, but has since ceased and no longer views the poos as grub.

activeviii
watched crufts and a vet on there said pineapple dont work and recommend using a ball or a treat to bring them away from the poo. and praise them when they come away. My cocker did it for a while, fox poo, run dog poo and the worse was i walked in a wood when i noticed the dog eating something, the was bog paper near what he was eating after this i sorted the problem with a rubber ball. kept a close eye on him and kept him close, he started to sniff a poo and was just about to tuck in when the ball made contact with his ribs. only took the one throw, never been a problem since. the vet use to like him wormed over 3 days as well because of the **** chomping but hes over it now so one days dose is good enough now. Mungler
The only other option is keep an eagle eye - as soon as he lets one go, get out there and scoop it. Mind you, that's no fun at night when it's dark, cold and raining.
