Gunner Chip
I was wondering if there was a .17HMR ammo type you could recommend. Thanks
Dekers
Hornady 17g V-Max works well in mine, but so to does the 20g CCI HP now, and most others! That was not the case when it was brand new, it hated some ammo, but several thousand rounds down the line it seems to get on pretty well with most now!! Frenchieboy
I run nothing but Remington Premier 17gr through my CZ 452 Varmint. Never had a single missfire and accuracy of the rifle never varies, if a shot is off target I know that it is me that is at fault and not the Rifle/Ammo combination. Guest topshot_2k
I mainly use winchester 20gr gamepoints or Federal 17gr V shok. I hade a dodgy batch of remingtons where they wouldnt feed from my mag properly so not used them since. Although they did shoot well. Redgum
Niether my .22 or .17hmr like remington ammo, the .17hmr likes cci tnt 17grain and Wincester 20grain but does ok with most but not remington.
verminator69
Mine shoots well with 17gr V shock but i am going to try some 20gr win to give them a try.
chezza1986
My dad's got a .17hmr and I use it a bit with him. When we bought the gun we bought some Federal ammunition and these worked well with our rifle but the shop didn't have many, only 50 to be precise. We went into town and bought some Remmington and these have worked well in our rifle aswell but not quite as good as the Federal but only very slightly, not noticeable at 75-100 yards but at further ranges it's not a tight as groups but this is what our rifle likes and yours maybe slightly different. Either way Remmington or Federals are 2 good brands in our eyes. Jack
deputy dog
Hornady v max 17/ 20 grain work great thru my hmr. Have tried other makes with similar results. But as my local dealer does me a good deal on the Hornady, i use them all the time now. Plenty of punch and a good accurate cartridge. Beardo
Been using Hornady recently, they do the job well enough. Usually use Remington though - have more confidence in them.
Lez325
most of the 17 HMR ammo available is in fact made by CCI Les
Dekers
most of the 17 HMR ammo available is in fact made by CCILes Are yes, but the different colour tips make all the difference!! ...I also find it strange that the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire was developed buy Hornady, in conjunction with Marlin Firearms and Ruger Sturm! I say at the moment as it seemed like the Hornadys used to

Beardo
there's another thread discussing this - i've found the same to be true - can't remember who, but someone did email Hornady asking about the blue tips - and they denied even doing them at first! al4x
I'm on red tips at the moment , got some blues as well but not quite onto them yet
hyflier
most of the 17 HMR ammo available is in fact made by CCI CCI only load them all, the manufacturers are independent so that probably accounts for the minor variations, I keep meaning to buy some Remmington to try them out, I keep hearing they're good
Horrocks
You know, I was going to mention that but was unsure if i was making it up in my head! The remingtons do seem to cause a lot more damage, glad its not just me. I've found the remmy's pretty destructive too, for some reason louder as well. They also group badly through mine, I only use Hornday and Federal (Blue and Black) through mine and get fantastic results, Edit: just swapped from Hornady to Federal for the moment, missed all the rabbits yesterday after getting 5 hornaday head shots the day before, found that Federal give good groups but a half inch to the left. Evil Elvis
I enquired about the cci rumour and remmington supposedley make thier own. I tried hornadys, blue tips and they were fine, same poi too. But I tend to stick to remmingtion as a rule. I have a galvanised metal sheet that is 7mm thick on one of my shoots and at 125 yards the remmingtons zip straight through it, the hornadys barely dent it!!! Its a confidence thing!

That sounds a dramatic difference, are they both the same weight and head! What is this 7mm thick galvanised metal sheet? At 125 yards for a HMR ballistic tip to pass through will take some doing, I would have expected surface splash as you suggest with Hornadys!
Evil Elvis
 I foolishly used the club pattern plate as a backstop.....only it didnt stop them!!! Now its a culender! a friend on mine did the same using the side of an incinerater, with 5mm steel, the round passed through both sides at 50 yards!!! Interestingly, i did post this in the past, my mates gun, who set up with me, using the remington ammo but with a shorter barrel.....16" also didnt penetrate, maybe the 21" barrel has something to do with it? Ill take some piccys next time im up there. Edited April 25, 2010 by Evil Elvis
Alpha Mule
Isn't this about the amount of powder burning by the time the bullet leaves the barrel?
hyflier
I agree with Dekers, That IS a dramatic difference 7mm is 1/4 inch, thats a lot of metal for a ballistic tip bullet to pass through .... I wonder, do these ricochet a lot?
