stubby
always wear a face veil when in the hide, but as has been asked in another post, as a glasses wearer, it can sometimes be a pain, made me start to think about the dvd's Ive seen, inc my "jack hargreaves" ones, some good shoots, large bags, yet all the shooters are wearing no more than a large brimned hat and sunglasses so whats the difference, why can they get away with it, yet we cover up like a sniper
docholiday
I guess its all about increasing your chances, some days you could stand in the middle of the decoy pattern and shoot them, others they are really jumpy doc
Cranfield
I wear glasses and wear a half face mask when in a hide. Is it essential ? all I know is that if you get someone to stand in a hide without mask or gloves you can see their face and hands a long way away. stripey999
I've got to agree with cranfield. In the military we wear cam paint for good reason. When we do our fieldcraft, we work on the proven principle that at 200m a person is clear in all detail and colour of skin is identifiable. At 300m, face colour is still visible but remaining details are blured. Therefore if we can see your pink face at 300m but not any other detail, then a pigeon with better eyesight surely can. motty
I usually wear a mask and cap when pigeon shooting. I only really wear the mask because i like to look out from a pigeon hide all the time and i know that a lot of the time i can be in full view of pigeons commiting to the decoy pattern, and they won't see me. I don't know if i'm lucky, but i always seem to spot pigeons a long time before they spot me. I think if your hide discipline is ok, there isn't any need for a hat or mask really. I still prefer to wear them, though.
SystonGame
Dont think its 100% necessary but something to break up the human features is always good. Prey animals are super senstive to movement so I think its more important to move slowly (stalk)
pegasus bridge
i think for pigeon shooting movement is key - i dont think it is critical to wear a faceveil - just make sure not to move - but for crows i would definitley say it is needed- a crow will spot you even if you are perfectly still. just MHO
Greenhunter
I always wear a head net and I wear glasses with no real problems except the occasional misting up when I first put the net on. I find the net keeps my specs tight to my face and stops me having to push the up into place all the time. I, too, like to look over the hide so I find its entirely necessary for me to wear face cover. Movement, or lack of it, is still important tho! wymberley
Tried with and without over the years, they're not necessary provided you do as you should and look through the hide. Rooks though have been the bane of my life until I just really had to bet a new net which I got from our sponsors and that sorted it - they just don't seem able to see through it. Best bit of pigeon (and rook) shooting kit (after the little Churchill) that I've ever bought. Cheers.

THEINVISIBLESCARECROW
I don't use a net most of the time, I regard one as essential.
Lez325
I always use a Veil ( mesh type) when Hide shooting Pigeons or Corvids- you'd be amazed hiw much a whiteb face stands out amongst all that hide material and I do try to keep movement to an absolute minimum Never use one for Fox or Rabbot shooting as Im so far from the intended taget , as to not need one Les Edited June 6, 2010 by Lez325
wymberley
Why is it that you SHOULD look through the hide? Motty, hi. Yep, quite right, wrong word as it implies obligatory. What I meant but didn't say was that in my opinion it is preferable. Cheers

What I meant but didn't say was that in my opinion it is preferable.Cheers i think it is good practice to have and may well contribute to a good days shooting especially with rooks and crows as you get people who have 'ants in their pants' and keep getting up to peek over the hide to get a clear view
Dr_T
Wearing a face veil in this recent heat is somewhat uncomfortable - too hot and sweaty for my liking. Also I'm not seeing many pigeons out in this heat either!
anser2
I usualy wear a face veil , but being a glass wearer they are a real pain causing my glasses to fog up in still conditions. I prefer a 1\2 veil , but even have fogging problems with that. There are conditions when I can get away without wearing a mask, for example when hiding in deep shade under a overhanging tree. Highlander
If you're like most people, who can't sit still or resist looking around for pigeons every five minutes then a face veil is most likely essential. Nothing stands out (often for miles) like a round white face. I always wear one when pigeon shooting (unless I forget it and leave the damn thing behind) BUT I find it most useful when walking the headgerows etc for birds, they simply don't seem to take as much notice of a human when there's no face visible. In fact I've often stood still in the middle of a field (whilst crossing it) with pigeons flighting over me and still got them in range when wearing a veil...try doing that with your face full on visible!
