Well, as ive never made one of these before, i had a fair bit of reading to do. The main body of it seems easy enough, but the ladder is the bit that might need tweeking.

Made the ends first, and then realised A: i was not going to get it in the car, and B: it was going to cost a fortune to mesh it.

So, Where to start

I assembled it on site, but found i had ran out of staples  , managed to find a bag of cable ties in the boot, so the day was saved. Left some scraps in it, with the ladder of, and ill re-bait it for the next few days. Its not up to the standards of someone like MC's work, but its ok for me. Now we wait.

Build time, 4 hours. Cost £50.

i know what you mean. The thing is, i do what i can for the farmer, as im sure there is always someone who can take my place. I spent most of the day there yesterday with some dog boys from hunting Life. Managed to drag a rats nest out with 13 in it. For the first time since ive had the shoot, the farmer offered us a coffee  , which we all accepted. I would be gutted if i lost this shoot, as there is so much to do there. Another thing, is now i have my very own crow trap

Hi MM, never seen one of these before, not done much in the way of crows, only deeked them. How does it work?

Very tidy job by the way :good:

Crows drop through the ladder , but due to there wingspan cannot get back out though the ladder :P

MM could of done with being twice the size  and no door :drinks: class

once it gets going, ive a feeling it might need emptying twice a day. and as for no door, well....................................................p22-air-pistol.jpg:good:

another thing, would i be better off with a call bird in it as well?

Martin dont take this the wrong way but any crow will escape that trap, they will scale the wire and pop thru the side ladder openings you want wider wood in that area, its hard to tell from the photo but the ladder gaps want to be about half that size :good:

Harv, do you think i should put an extra rung in the end two sections? The main gaps on the plans said 9' but it looked a bit on the big side when i offered it up. i reduced them to 8' and felt a bit happier.

Not an extra rung you want approx 6" wide piece of flat ply or similar to actually block the side openings, I will take some photos by tomorrow also I leave approx 10" of chicken wire all around the base and peg down with hazel.

more good advice :good: as im still at the baiting stage, ive got time to perfect the ladder area. ill get some ply on the ends. it has also been sugested that i put a skirt of mesh around the ladder on the inside. what you think?

I agree with the previous comments about amendments (narrowing the gaps, and something to stop them running up the sides and out through the ladder- I use chickenwire). I also make my ladder traps from sections, as it is much easier to transport and store them this way and with a few cable ties they can be quickly put up or dismantled. The sections can then also be used for other things when you are not trapping such as partridge pens. A section based trap is also better because you can leave part of the roof off and bait it up getting the corvids used to feeding in it.

The important thing is that when you fix your trap it will certainly catch corvids. <_<

cheers Teal. I was concerned that the pen might be a bit small, but it looks about the same size as yours. Im going to use chicken wire, rather than board to cover the gaps, and put a small skirt hanging down around the ladder. I was going to use Mungler as a call bird, but his ugly mug scare even the blind ones away. <_<
