Maidment78
Afternoon all, Right, I have an issue in the form that the wife is about to push out a small person and as my estate is bigger than the polo she wants it. No worries there as it is only fair but then I got to thinking that now might be a good time to get a new toy before the baby drains all funds for the next 30 years. I have a linited budgedt like most people these days and I am not after a water painting just a solid reliable unit that I can fix if needed. £3-4k is the amount I can scrape together. I have a dog that needs to sit in the back with all the kit and the land I shoot over is moderate in its terrain, the pulling of a horse box would be a bonus. Any ideas? J@mes
TD5 Disco or a shogun at that price. You'll probably get a really tidy 10 year old motor for that budget!
HDAV
Scooby forester? Alot depends on mileage you will do, tax, insurance etc
Mungler
I'd go with the TD5 only because my one has been particularly good to me, but I understand that they are not all like that. Cheap and Jap - what about a Honda CRV? There's a 2001, 1 owner from new one, private sale, 32k, CRV 2.0iLS and they want £3750. Cash deal at £3400 and job jobbed with road tax for £3500. Saying that there's another CRV 1 owner from new - 2000 HONDA CR-V 2.0i ES Executive 5dr Auto Estate (private), 57,000 miles, Automatic, Silver, Petrol and that's up for £2500 but it looks like it's in Scotland. jonesbach
if your looking for something you can repair easily id opt for an older land rover..keep your eyes out for an ex military series land rover..(pre '72tax exempt) just like a meccano set! my father has one and we've changed the engine twice(just because we wanted to!lol!) now has a disco 2.5 tdi engine and would pull anything out of anywhere! these can be found restored and good to go for what you want to pay. check out fleabay!! just dont expect all the comfort as a modern vehicle.. wymberley
HDAV beat me to it, so: The CRV used to have a huge sun-roof and with no transmission tunnel. it made a superb ambush vehicle for rabbit and fox. They changed this some time back (guessing here, but perhaps like other vehicles they went to monocoque construction and encountered rigidity problems) but if the YOM that you mention pre-dates this, theyr'e worth a punt. As is an X-Trail. Cheers

Maidment, may I hi-jack your thread just to ask Mr Smith what year his CRV is and does he have any idea when the change was made? al4x
Isuzu trooper or shogun should be in your budget, you'll get a tidy SWB for that money the trooper will give you more room but both will do what you want and tow the horse box. Parts for servicing are cheap from Milners and most jobs are relatively simple DIY. Ignore the older landrover 90's etc as yes they are cheap and usually easy to fix but you want a shooting vehicle not another hobby repairing old landys. Disco's etc you'll get a tidy one for the money on arround a 98-00 plate but buyer beware there is an awful lot of rubbish out there. As Mungler says get a good one and you'll be fine if not it'll turn into a moneypit. I've got my eyes on a 2 owner TD5 that I'll get cheap eventually but I know all its history so its worth a punt but if you don't beware

southdowns_stalking
I would go for a Discovery TD5 or a Defender, easy to fix and with the defender they will really hold the money, can add bits when you have any spare cash and can easliy get your money back if you find a good cheap one. Im on my 3rd one now and cant see me ever getting any other car apart from a range rover as a weekend toy!!
Maidment78
Right, Got me a 2001 Izuzu Trooper LWB off ebay with a blown engine for £800. Was just about to buy a recon 3.1 engine when someone advised me about a recall on the trooper, called the UK Izuzu office and yes, there was a recall to the car i bought that was waiting to be done. Managed to get the thing to the garage with smoke pumping out the back and they took one look and have signed it off for a replacement engine! still in shock. The body work is 100% and now with the engine replaced for free I have a bomb proof toy for less than a grand! Happy days,,,,,
