Anyone on here done stock car racing ?

I have been talking to a guy at the garage I use and he reckons that it is a cheap(ish) petrolhead hobby. (he does Euro class)

I havent killed myself on the jetski yet and need a new buzz.

What say you PW petrolheads ?

I will happily try and kill my self on your jetski if you want

Looking at your Facebook photos I dont think that you would stay sober enough to even drive off campus. Bring the boy in your photos in the ambulance that had wet himself - at least my jet ski is waterproof

Anyway, anyone else know about Euro Stock Racing ?

I was heavily involved in the late 70’s early 80,s with a Gloucestershire based driver on the BRISCA Formula one circuits. I was team member/mechanic for a guy called Jon Lander who was known as the Nippy Gnome. We had a car with a 400 cubic inch ford engine with Holley carburettors.

The top guys like Wainman, Smith & the gold top World Champion; Close used 454 V8 Chevvy engines that used to purr. There used to be a bloke called Hoss Ferniough that had a blue flame coming from the exhaust pipe 2ft long when he scorched around Brandon with the lights dimmed.

My favourite driver was a chap called Bernard Poyser who was absolutely fearless and used to mix it up with the best of them. He had the nickname of “No Tomorrow Bernard”

We used to occasionally stay with another driver called Pete Duran in Hinkley and from our base near Cirencester used to take our Car in a converted bus to, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Long Eaton, Bradford Oval, Nelson, Sheffield, Belle View (the old stadium) Mendip, Harringay and up as far as Newton Aycliffe in Co Durham. “it was always advertised as “Aycliffe for Action” My favourite track though was the tarmac oval at Brafield on the Green, Northhamptonshire…We had some brilliant days there and they always used to play ELO Mr Blue Sky during the pre-race warm up. The start of the racing day was always a stop off at the nearest off licence for 3 or 4 crates of Newcastle Brown…We used to have the odd punch up with the opposing crew and knew every late night chip-shop within a 100 mile radius of Birmingham ! Happy days.!

Obviously nothing like being there, but having watched the documentary on the telly about stock cars, and I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

If I were you I would look at entry level tarmac speed events like sprinting or hillclimbing.

Despite being single start, they certainly get the adrenaline flowing.

Some argue they are the purist form of motorsport, it's you against the clock, so only you can screw it up.

Nothing is 'cheap' these days but you compete in classes so you can use any from a quick road legal car up to purpose built racers.

Stick Gurston Down into Youtube to get an idea of what it is about.
