There have been a fair few threads recently where its apparent that we have a fair few members who are anti game shooting. I thought it was about time for a poll to gauge how many out of interest and if you feel like saying how you formed the opinion feel free. To me its missing out on one of the finest sides of shooting and its interesting how many don't agree yet shoot

And on a more serious note, I do kinda get where some of the guys are coming from on the "anti" side of things - I've been on some days where the birds being sent over the guns were either juvenile or just couldn't achieve anything like a sporting height and weren't far short of being shot like fish in a barrel - The sort of days where Stevie Wonder wouldn't come away embarassed - Lift your barrels, cover the bird, bang, dead - Repeat ad nauseum until bored. Have also had other days where the birds were flying like absolute screamers, coming out at fantastic heights and speeds and offering some really challenging and different shots in stunning locations - Think these are the days that the anti guys have missed out on.

Well put that man :good:

well no, not really.

It's a bit like the eating of animals/ wearing of animal products.

Yes, I eat meat and wear leather/ fur - doesn't mean I agree with the Chinese skinning animals while they are alive though, that is a bit far for me.

And as fatcatsplat has said, shoots where the birds come across like clays on the kiddies stand is more "slaughter" than sporting shooting, and massive bags of boring, untesting birds don't really interest me either. I'd rather a small bag that the guns have really had to work for.

To me your either pro bloodsports or anti bloodsports. How can you be anti game shooting and pro pigeon shooting? We should all support each other no matter what we shoot or hunt.

It's not quite as simple as that though.

Pigeon are shot because they're a pest species and can cause huge amounts of damage to crops. Game birds are bred to be shot for sport, nothing else.

Game shooting does nothing for me, it just doesn't interest me at all. I would stand up for anyones legal right to shoot whatever they want, but for various reasons game shooting's not for me I'm afraid.

Who are the left footers round here that don't like game shooting?

Out them!

P.S.

Syndicate day tomorrow. I get more excited about the beating than the shooting these days.

Funny that - I am the same, I have only shot 2 days this Year

have a few good days booked over Christmas, but on my two syndicates I have been picking up or beating and taking the **** big time!

Game shooting is a brilliant day out with good pals, as for the post about knocking down bird after bird, its your decision to raise your gun and shoot an average bird, You have to be selective - and if you do not think its testing, get on decent shoot and see how well you do!!!!!

Game shooting is what got me interested in shooting in the first place ,started of beating then helping out ,i now work part time a few hours each day on a biggish shoot and have done for 10 years i also shoot game this time of year around 2 times a week on invites and a roaming syndicate .

I dont see how you could not like game shooting or think its wrong then think any other kind of shooting is fine :hmm:

:good:

I partake in any type of shooting and I totally agree with what Dazza had to say. Fatcatsplat, why would you partake on a day's shooting if the birds weren't sporting? Lets face it, game birds are reared for sport and we owe it to the quarry as sports men to only take sporting birds. I do a lot of woodcock shooting and if I shot every bird I saw I could have shot about 3-4 dozen already this year, however, I have only shot 10 sporting birds.

Totally agree, I would say 95% of people shoot pigeons for the sport factor, I know I am one of them.

Just in to my vermin shooting, not into sport shooting because i dont like the idea of birds being raised to be shot for money/dont like tweed makes me itch, dont like snobs looking down at me,cant afford £220 pair of wellies, havent spent loads on training a pair of labs, wouldnt be seen dead in a pair of those stupid britches/socks,dont think my rizzini e would fit,am bored now so just add what ever you like here. :good:

If you could arrange it for some guys to keep the woodies coming over the woods non stop or the rabbits coming across the fields while i shoot the lot,i would be very happy. :D

Just as well this is PIGEON WATCH or we could be invaded by those who have to pay for it every weekend

I said this on the other thread - if YOU do not own the land, or the crops - why are you shooting the pest? YOU are doing it for sport the same as the game shooter, if it was all about pest control the farmer would be paying YOU :good: - its all the same SPORT - we do it because we enjoy the sport.

I agree with you ProTOM1 - and especially the last - unity !

The difference being that pigeons are truly wild birds, not bred specifically to be shot.

I enjoy shooting pigeon and wildfowl. I enjoy pitting myself against a truly wild quarry and trying to get it within range for a shot. Having a reared bird beaten towards me just doesn't float my boat.

I can understand a few mates getting together and forming an informal syndicate, but the big commercial shoots are like a pantomime from my point of view. There's far too much 'tradition' on these shoots and it's this that will more than likely cause shooting to come under the spotlight.

I shoot game and I can ensure you I am no snob  . Everyone in our syndicate is a member of the family or a life time friend so our syndicate is really friendly, we are not snobbish in that all of us use semi-autos and dress in whatever gear we want. It costs us about £150 for the year and we have some fantastic sport. I wouldn't change the syndicate for the world as the craic is great and it's such a relaxed atmosphere.

Not all game shooting involves reared birds. Just remember woodcock, snipe and grouse are all a truely wild bird. However, I do agree that the big shoots are not everyone's cup of tea, but I am not going to criticise anyone elses idea of sport. :good:

I do agree that not all birds are reared but the vast majority of shoots centre around reared pheasant, partridge and duck. As I said I can understand a few friends getting together in an informal syndicate, in the way you have done. It's the big, formal shoots that don't sit right with me.
