AVB
Although I earn a fair wage I don't feel I really have a lot to show for it. Over the (too many) years I have probably just ****** a lot of it away. So I am making a concerted effort this year to be sensible. I've done some analysis on how we as a family should now be spending my income and I think it breaks down as follows: Mortgage 24% School/university Fees 24% Utilities/Council tax 7% Petrol/Car 3% Food 5% Misc. stuff 4% Savings 33% Obviously people who are mortgage free or who don't pay school fees will have a different split and people one a low wage may not be able to put anything aside but I would be interested to see how different people spend their money. leeds chimp
never really looked at the spending like that i just know we are on a low income and are just getting by no chance of saving at all the mortgage alone takes 75% of my wage
njc110381
Interesting breakdown. In our house it is something like... 50% House bills (morgage, utilities) 20% Food shopping and takeaway 15% Fuel 15% Non essential (read shooting or new shoes/handbags) items or unforseen bills (car breakages, other ****ups). So savings... Yeah right! We just about get by but are reducing our approximately 7% takeaway bill and non essentials to try to save a bit. As soon as we have a bit put by something seems to go wrong but that's life in the early years of home ownership so I'm told. Luckily we have my dad in a flat attatched to the house so if we get really short we chat him up for a bit of rent! Ususlly all his bills are included in ours so it doesn't feel so much a begging trip as a request for contributions to the bills! It's a great relief to know we have help if it's needed but on the whole we support him and he likes to buy us treats that we can't afford for ourselves. Paddy Galore!
i am poor. you are considerably richer than me. can i have some of your money please? About 60% of our income goes on household bills, 10-15% on fuel for motors, about 20% on debt the remainder usually gets spent on unforseen expenses or treats. Cheers OTH It's got nothing to do with individual income, and as AVB says in the original post peoples circumstances are different ie. kids/free of mortgage etc. That's why he's done it as a percentage. Cookiemonsterandmerlin.
Of course it does nearly 50% of his income is going to a area that could be cut down or even removed from his outgoings. So if this income is £250 thousand a year then its hardly somethink to grumble about as its seems he is wanting us to feel for HIM. But if he earns £20 grand a year its brings his plight to a diffrent light even though he would still be putting nearly £10 grand towards a area to that could be remove or reduced. Added he is saying over 50% of his income is going to saving and school uni fees thats alot ,and could be removed to help him to have more to show for his income. Cheers OTH Edited February 13, 2011 by Over the hill

You're a strange one.
sako751sg
Roughly 18% covers my half of all food and domestic bills, including council tax ect. 10%ish on fuel 5%ish covers motor insurances, mots, tax and maintainance. The rest is banked and used for whatever and whenever, mostly shooting and fishing related, and maybe even treat the missus to a £1.99 bunch of floowers if she has been good. Also about 2% goes into private savings stuff for me and the wee man. Edited February 13, 2011 by sako751sg

Wouldn't you? What's wrong with saving if you can. Wouldn't you? Let's assume you didn't want to save any money or help your kids, what exactly would you do with your spare cash? libs
I'm a student. I have very little money and I spend most of it on trying to pull birds (the featherless kind) and trying not to die of starvation. A breakdown can be found below: Beer: 30% Spirits: 20% Cider: 30% Pot noodle: 10% Super noodles: 10% Sometimes I swap noodle money for toilet cleaner, but only if i'm feeling flush or had a win on a scratch card. AVB
Blimey people can have a have a fight over anything on here. All I was trying to do was to get a sense of how people spend their money. I have made the conscious decision to try to save more, for a while at least. Yes I am fortunate that I can do that at the moment but we do make some sacrifices. Also neither the wife or I drink or smoke and rarely go out for meals. Not because we can't afford it - we are just dull I suppose. And whilst we have typically splashed out on flash cars and holidays but we will probably do neither this year but rather try to get some money in the bank. I was not insinuating that others can do the same and I most certainly wasn't after sympathy as I don't feel sorry for myself. I appreciate that I don't have to send the children to a private school and people make decisions on whether to send their children depending on their financial position, their political or moral views or a combination. I know some people who are very rich and the school fees are no more than pocket money to them. I also know others who are are not rich by any means and who make huge sacrifices to send their children. My daughters best friends dad is a window cleaner come part time builder come car mechanic (in fact does any work he can get his hands on) to send his daughter to school. I also know somebody who has a 911, Range Rover and an Aston Martin who doesn't send his children because in his words "I like the nicer things in life". I'm not going to criticise him for doing that as it's his life to live.
