elmstone
Go easy I am new to shotgun shooting ! I am off the states (Minneapolis) on a business trip next week, I have been informed that I an very close to a 'Cabelas' outlet. Which is one of the biggest hunter shops in the US. I was looking at getting some decoys and looking at what they have. Looking on the web site they don't have anything on pigeons decoys just doves. Are they different to our 'Doves' or do they call pigeons Doves ? Does anybody have any money saving items that I can buy (Cheaper in US than UK) ? Forget the illegal stuff ? sussex
America doesnt have Wood Pigeon they are a European Bird so the Decoys would most likeley bit different Things You could buy alot cheaper there though are Camo gear clothes Hide Equipment ETC Bright Orange Vests so You dont get shot by the American Hunters ana super tight Chokes designed for Turkey shooting but I definatley feel they have a place in Fox shooting with the Shotgun
Cranfield
The dove decoys are of our mourning dove, there are no wood pigeons in the US, but plenty of ferals. Best buys are cammo clothing, general outdoor wear and fishing gear (if you are a fisherman).

Kenzie
They look very simular to our "stock doves"
Cranfield
Trust me, the decoys will be of mourning doves, (sometimes collared doves in the far South)as they are the "sporting" species and subject to shooting season, bag limits etc. Rock doves, or rock pigeons are clasified as pests and can be shot all year round. However, as they mainly frequent built up areas, parks etc., they are not usually shot, but controlled by trapping.
elmstone
Thanks for the advise, I think I will just look at cammo wear & hides, or blinds as they call them.

Is there any difference between a Morning dove and a Mourning dove? 99.9% of references I have seen spell it "Mourning" Dove, I have only seen one reference to "Morning"Dove. They are the same bird. The similar pronunciation probably encourages the misspelling. If you have any friends that fish, you might invite them to check out Cabelas online catalogue and give you a shopping list. Reels and fishing line (especially braid and flurocarbon) are really cheap in the US (comparative brands) and don't take up much room in a suitcase. Highlander
Take two/three days just to view Cabelas. Don't whatever you do buy any dove decoys from the USA they bear no resemblence to our woodpigeons but there's a shed load of other kit you'll want to spend your money on! Oh nearly forgot...take an empty suitcase (or three) with you for the excess baggage on the homeward journey
Bigbob
Go over with just a couple of pairs of shorts and t-shirts and one pair of sandals you will fill your case on the homeward journey . I went for three weeks and spent every second day at outdoor world a catalogue was $5 but if you spend more than $30 it was free . When i was there it was $2 to the £1 and the cammo gear was dead cheap and considering most dealers buy it there and import it here i was shocked at what they where asking for cammo gear here . Only thing to watch for was i bought 13 inch redhead cammo waterproof boots and had to wear them home as they where so heavy and looked bloody silly with shorts and t-shirt .But apart from that its been 3 years since i went and ive still got brand new gear left
claybreaker88
Cabelas great so cheap even when you order online and have it delivered to the uk one third of the price beats the thieves here.
