Why do people do it????

What is wrong with people that they feel the need to make virus's?

My computer picked up a virus called Ramnit G and ExeDropper while my ex had it and it is decimating the computer and nothing will get rid of it

I have now had to spend over £100 on software to do a complete reformat of the hard drive to get rid and there is still no guarantee that it won't copy back over from the externals that I have backed up the files to if they are infected!!

If you are going to do this sort of thing then why be malicious, why not just infect it with something that flashes a nice picture of a rainbow then goes dormant?? It would still prove your ability to do it but wouldn't **** people off.

Watch out for this virus guys, it seems to be getting more prevalent from what I have been reading and is a real nightmare.

Torrent sites seem to be one of the main ways it is getting spread.

I've ended up having to shell out over £100 for software (heaven forbid they give you copies of the programs you've paid for with the computer) and will be doing a complete re-format, although it may come back if its tucked in on the external that I have backed all my files on to.

Nightmare!!

Cos they are little ****s! Plus somewhere down the line they make money. Same principle as the Nigerian King emailing you to help with some extra cash he's stumbled upon. Ultimately, somebody, somewhere thinks it's genuine and goes through with it. Hard to believe I know!

Virus' these days tend to be more spam/malware related. Either duping you into paying to 'clean' your system threatening people could be getting all your information, credit cards etc.. It's just scare mungering - but poorly coded and digs deep into the system. It is actually the exact reason I quit my last job. I wasn't fixing computers anymore. 90% of the work was getting rid of this **** - became a mind numbing bore. Started off ok as it was a thrill finally resolving it delving deep into the OS. In the end, it became cost prohibitive. Much easier to backup data, wipe and reload windows!

Although to be fair, i'm not sure why on earth you have paid £100 for software to format your drive when it is all there free for you?!?

Because I suspect that its the ex downloading from sites like that which put it there in the first place!!

I used to know someone who created viruses and i asked him once why he did it.His reply-because i can.He was/is a complete and utter bum hole and didnt care about the trouble they cause people.

I had one about 8 years ago and will remember its name forever-'W32 Blasterworm' which apparently went worldwide in 12 hours.Ended up having to reformat laptop.

All comes down to money, power and control. A lot of viruses are simply there to gain control of a machines so it can be controlled to relay spam mail or be involved in a distributed attack on a company or website. It's possible for you to send your requirements to the virus writers and custom build you a piece of malware exactly how you want it for very little £.

Annoyingly the easiest way to protect you and your machine is install simple AV software, keep up to date with patches and exercise caution when browsing. The biggest gains in minimising virus/malware infection is simple user education.

If you didn't want that popup window to appear or expect that email from someone you've never heard of then don't interact with it.

If you pick up a well written virus you might never know it's there. Could be logging you right now, waiting for you to visit your bank account. :yp:

The real blame should lie with MicroSoft for shipping such insecure rubbish to the world.

Really? What about Adobe? Or Siemens? Or Apple? Most software whether operating system, browser, manufacturing systems or portable document readers are susceptible to an attack. Some can be secured by better coding, some protected by anti-virus technologies, others by simply using with caution.

The problem with Windows machines and software running on them is they are a much bigger target than smaller userbases such as Mac or Linux. Therefore more malicious code is written to attack it and more coders know Windows environments than the others. Purely a numbers game.

The one thing AV and the likes can't protect is the end user and his/her behaviour.

It's not kids writing them now, Mafia money is behind many of them.

More specifically organised criminal gangs. Most are in it for money, some for notoriety and others for political purposes. The common theme across most of the malicious code and attacks is that they are all highly organised.

Hey ho! If you got it from a torrent site then so be it, you rip off someone, someone rips you off and if you want your money back then go for it(tongue firmly in cheek).

I don't know how true this is but I imagine it could be.

Someone who I know who used to clean viruses off for people said that the viruses can act like a CV.

In other words, if the programme written is good enough to breach established AV then that is the person that the AV company wants working for them.

Poachers to Gamekeepers sort of thing.

I used to work with a guy called Dr Alan Solomon. He was at the time an Equity Research Analyst (Oils sector to be precise). Nothing to do with technology. This was mid eighties and he had an interest in the growing PC market and being aware of the fledgling viruses that were around at the time started to write anti-virus software. He said that people who wrote virus just saw it as a challenge to prove that they were more intelligent that the developers of operating systems or anti-virus software.

He eventually gave up his day job and created Dr's Solomon's Software which became one of the largest anti-virus companies in the world. He sold out to Macafee in the late nineties for about £500mln.

He was a nice guy but had the most awful eating habits!

No, ignorance is what spreads them.

If you download a file from a torrent or P2P network, you're going to get a virus if you're not vigilant.

I see a lot of irony in you paying for antivirus, but saying that you use torrent sites.

Over the years of using Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, Frostwire etc etc I have never got a virus. It's just clear that a 3 minute music file isn't going to be 28kb, so you avoid it.

Hang on, this has been said a few times now.

I never said I use torrents, I don't.

The virus was picked up while I didn't have the computer and I have read that torrent sites are common causes of viruses is all!!

Surfing the internet in general is the source of viruses. You don't need to visit download sites to become the owner of a new piece of software.

You shouldn't have wasted your money on antivirus. AVG/Adaware will keep you covered just as well as any paid for antivirus.

You should have spent that money on a Mac or just got Linux for free ;)
