pigeon predator
Hi guys Give me your opinion on floaters please chaps, wether you rate them or not, if so which you prefer, artificial or dead birds? If artificial which make or home made? Has anybody got any of Chris greens floaters? They look very effective but they have a massive rod which looks like it would be a nightmare to transport about. Lookin forward to your replies guy :-) Cheers Ian
Cosd
Very good mate, light in the kit bag and add great movement. Use them to point at your decoys to guide the birds in; I've used them 60 yards out on the brow of a hill when there were birds dropping in past the hill and the floater worked with good effect. You can use them all year round on any crop, and of course they come into their own when you are shooting over long crops as you can elevate them high. I prefer dead birds on them, one because there is no better than a real bird and also because the floater itself fits in my hide pole bag. Our sponsors sell them for £16 each or buy two get one free I think, plus you get PW member discount. I have just one but want to get one maybe two more. Greenhunter
are you trying to say hawkeye's are rubbish there?? Definitely not trying to say anything of the sort. Hawkeye is a decent bloke. Why would I say that!! Don't read between the lines....you'll find nothing. Just offering an alternative and trying to make a buck to supplement the pension if that's ok with you? ditchman
I always veiwed floaters as a waste of time and more rubbish to cart about..........until i made a swiviling cradle and took it out to try it...i never go without it, and the amazing thing is it works wether there is wind , or calm, i made the mistake of putting it too far out to begin with, the birds dropped in near the floater rather than the decoys, so i positioned it away from me but on a line that would bring the birds in past me....it needs a bit of thought where to put it but well worth the effort taking it.....less is more they say !! ditchman

Hamster
There are days when a whirly gig is unbeatable but they can prove a nusiance too, floaters though are rarely a put-off to incoming birds and can be used to both attract and direct birds into a preferred spot. I use up to three pro-made ones nowadays, but in the early days used to make my own easily enough. Once had a pigeon actually land on one and proceed to rape it :look: , not at all put off by the lack of reaction or mouthful of blue bottles. moxey
picked 2 my floaters up off hawkeye an his mate john, i must say ther both a crackin pair a lads tried floaters out, an im very impressed we the results, 1st time out i was ina corner ov a field with hedges on 2 sides, i put both floaters out near a gap in hedge, as to put a bita movement in the gap, an i must say it didnt take long to get noticed, ended the day with 48 woodies, an out ov all the days shgootin, only 3 a 4 birds got spooked by the floaters, the rest semt to come straight over hedge an into pattern, best £60 ive spent in a long while,an tday i found if you carry a couple ov tie wraps with you, you can fastern a floater to a thick branch with the spick that comes we floater an it works just as well as if it was put in ground, only ended up we 3 birds tday, it died off big style by dinner time, thanks again mike , john, enjoyed havin a chat we ya an all the best, we ya floaters, p.s you were right about ya decoys john, twice i nearly let a barrel off at the floaters, out a corner ov me eye, cheers again lads, all the best moxy
