henry d
So as a static method of fox control, do you use highseats or just stalk/sit out and if so do you find it works well ?
Beardo
we've got highseats on out shoot that work nicely for fox control (or muntjac should they happen to appear) - makes a pleasant evening sitting out

njc110381
I don't tend to bother with highseats for anything. I prefer to just lean against a tree because it's easier to get up and move if they don't show. Having said that they do have quite a solid routine sometimes. If you know where they move and need to use one for a safe shot I should think they would work very well. I should think a bait could make them even better. highseas
we have some nice open bits inbetween blocks of cristmas trees thats very good for shooting the deer from highseats, thats the only time i shoot foxes from them otherwise, its stalking of sitting out over a known area/dead sheep
AndyCM
I do a bit of lamb protection & the land sort of dictates that high seats are safer (saves using sheep as backstops) Taking a bit of time to plan locations for seats is worth the trouble - so even if you can't shoot a fox one day you can spot it's route for another day, that might be 300-500 odd yards from the seat, if the lie of the land allows that visibility. Also the foxes do the rounds at each pond & baiting works well too. I guess it depends on the ground - another patch is all lamping from a vehicle. Harnser
Over the years I have shot many a fox from the high seat whilst waiting for deer . My brief has always been fox and deer on the farms and rather a fox than a deer . High seat is just as good a place to wait for old reynard as any other place . Verminator 66
I find the high seat works well even better on flat ground as you are shooting down
Beardo
we have one on the corner of a wood that works well for baiting, another which is near a pen/pond which works well for just sitting
Mungler
I looked into it and am still mulling it over. The problem is economics, ease and comfort. We have a couple of shooting trucks for the farm. The Suzuki vitara has jacked up rear seats and you get a fair decent high line of sight. So for £500 you can get a completely mobile shooting platform that will also do for day to day lamping. It's got lights, heaters, leccy etc. What's the cost of say 3 decent high seats / chairs? Discuss.
Stealth Stalker
I bought 1 from the sportsman for £99, good steel construction, relativley light and moveable, comfortable & secure. I've made a further 3 that cost me nowt, 1 from an old ladder & school chair ( I doubt you'd fit in) And the others are pallets up trees with timber surrounding rails, the rickety old homemades have been the most productive Nothing better than sitting up a high seat seeing the comings & goings on your shoot, with the added bonus of slotting charlie while he's totally unaware your there. Baiting the area pays dividends SS
Beardo
the ladder school chair one scares the hell out of me - epsecially when i nearly fell asleep in it once!
Scully
We have two high seats, one which we built ourselves in the bowl of an old oak, from Swelite masonite I-beams.It has a bench seat which will seat three, and the floor is made from decking,4 metres from the ground. We use it for Roe,fox and rabbits, and is a pleasant way to spend an evening whether we see anything or not.The landowners wife sometimes climbs up to it and watches the sun set! The other is a fold-up portable from 'Bushwear'.Good bit of kit, just waiting for a second-hand extension to it from the Environment dept'. He simply drove to his chosen spot, sat in the chair and pressed a button to go up!
al4x
they win at this time of year for getting where you can't get with a 4x4 due to crops growing. They then put you high enough to see along field margins etc We shoot a lot from the truck but it does restrict where you can sit without a high seat at this time of year
grasshopper
Also with shooting out of the motor,it's too easy to give up and move on. We made our own,but still prefer getting up on the silage bales...more room
