Heilan Coo
Was wondering what you do with fox after you've shot it? Do you remove body or leave it as is? As I said in other post, I'd seen cubs in area I'd shot vixen but since then not seen anything. I more or less dumped fox in amongst gorse where I shot it. Will cubs have moved elsewhere? Should I have moved vixen away?
worthy130
we would normally remove the vixen as the cubs don't like seeing mother dead. Then go back the following night and they will be wandering around looking for her. There is a good chance that they have moved on.
foxbuster
I just drag them off the field and chuck them in the hedge, dont take long at all for them to decompose, espiecally in the warmer weather.
Heilan Coo
Thanks for the replies Wish I had dragged it away now, but just went with advice given by mate and got it out of sight. Hindsight eh
Dekers
At this time of year if you leave a shot deer out it in the right area it will have completely gone in about a week! Simply because virtually everything out there will eat it. Leave a fox out in the same situation and it will take a lot longer, because very little eats the fox, generally maggots, but they do work! As professionals appropriate disposal is required, as "sport" shooters the options go on forever, dig a hole and bury it, burn it, in the hedge, you can even take it home and put it in your rubbish bin, I would suggest bagging it well first to avoid copious maggots and a terrible smell! etc, etc. Whatever, have some respect and don't simply leave it lying around. triscrx
When I shot my 1st Fox I buried it sounds daft but I felt bad leaving it out just to decompose and had some respect for it so gave it a burial only took 10mins with a spade. As mentioned above ensure whatever you do with them they are out of sight otherwise it can easily turn into an own goal if the Antis find them. Richie10
by now the cubs will be plenty able to fend for themselves its not like they will be feeding on milk now, And he has just shot the reason they are staying in the area. Shoot the cubs and then the mother or dig to them. They haven't dispersed yet where I am.
Heilan Coo
Hi Don't leave them in the open sight.Someone left 3 in open, where found by member of puplic'then photo splashed on local paper gave antis a field day. Didn't leave it in open sight, left it "in" the gorse well hidden from public view. Member of the public nosing about would be more likely to get an earfull from the two old guys who run the croft behind gorse than get photo of dead fox anyhow. Heilan Coo
Shoot the vixen and leave the cubs.... Why not??? by now the cubs will be plenty able to fend for themselves its not like they will be feeding on milk now, Yes, more than able, both cubs I saw were a good size. As were the other two seen by farmer! Four cubs in total. And he has just shot the reason they are staying in the area. Shoot the cubs and then the mother or dig to them. They haven't dispersed yet where I am. Yes, and I'd do it again, the estate here is "jumping" with foxes! I was 20 yards short of being close enough to take out the two cubs I saw before they spotted me and the small matter of not having the gun with me! I'd have had to burn/cut down over an acre of gorse to dig them out, don't think the factor would have been too chuffed And there's plenty of cubs from other (litters?) up here that have dispersed. kent
Its an intersesting question. I do whatever the Landowner wishes, one wanted to see each one another left exactly were shot another thown in rushes or hedge. one guy even wanted me to hang them on the gates so all his tennants were aware we were on with it. personally i put them on the burn pile at home, when i first started foxing every last one was skinned pelts rolled and frozen then sent to a fur trader (it became quite profitable)I wish it was still like that today
