Lord Geordie
Try leaky pipes and poor control of money for repairs after your water company bosses give themselves nice fat payrises and sitting on about a million a year as a wage They need to spend money on repairs to get the (victorian) case iron water pipes replaced with modern piping. Yes it's a bit of an expense but think of the future savings as there will be MORE water on tap in future. The South had the common nerve a few year ago to ask for permission to pipe water from the NORTH (keilder to be precise) instead of repairing their existing pipes :o The need to get a grip and splash out on some new pipes. lurcherboy
Captain Sensible here :o Now look here chaps, due to building, tarmac, drains etc.etc. The rain now longer has the opportunity to drain through the old terrs firma to the underground reservoirs. Here endeth the lesson. LB

old rooster
It must be the wettest drought in history !! There are many problems involved, the first of which is that the French now own most of our water companies. We stiill see water wasted on a grand scale by the suppliers through poor reinvestment in pipes and slow reactions to sealing leaks. My neighbour recently had water pouring from a water meter in the road that was damaged by the silly woman from the water authority who came to read the meter, leaked for over 2 weeks equivalent to a couple of hosepipes running full time. Ironically it is, as ever, the customer who suffers for this inefficiency in the shape of hose pipe bans. Another serious problem is the over dredging of rivers to allow building to take place on flood plains, some once wonderful meandering rivers in this area have been reduced to mere ditches due to this indefensible attitude to planning. The water doesn't hold back for long enough to soak into the ground, it just rushes on it's way to the sea. There is no encouragement for home owners to adopt systems for re-using "grey" water or to collect rainwater for garden use, something that is quite common in other countries. All in all an abject failure to address the issues of failing water supplies but who is really surprised when we can't even control the simple issue of who comes into our country. kdubya
Its got sod all to with the French, or border control or labour government, or for that mattter rainfall? bearing in mind we have just had (officiallly) the wettest may in 25 years. its more to do with good old english capitilism, profit plundering, lack of foresight and appropriate investment. all these wonderfull traits which were warmly grasped by the queen of plunder ie an old crow called thatcher, when she broke up the water authorities, poorly run that they were , they still however could fall back on the "network" And of course the biggest culprit is population density (we all know) southerners are denser, seems you want to live and work in the same area, forcing house prices through the roof, and strain the resources of the area, to bursting, you (well probably not all) whinge if desalination plants are mentioned, whinge if they say ok get your hands in your pockets and pay, for a resource that with the present infrastructure is basically unsustainable.whinge if building controls are "attempted" etc, etc. In short MOVE anyway must break off got to water my garden (looking very green this year is my lawn) cheers KW

Ferret Master
Hi, Some of the pipes in Bristol are actually made out of wood and everyday the same amount of water is lost through leakage as goes over Niagra Falls in 45 minutes. However I think that if the water companies fixed all the leakages that many rivers or streams would dry up or significantly drop in water level as many of these leaks indirectly feed the watercourses. I think the South West needs more resevoirs like chew valley. FM

Does that mean you have a communal shower in your house and invite the neighbours round so you can all shower together then? Not to worry matey give it a few more years till global warming takes full effect and you will have MORE water down there than you can handle.
