Hunter
I was out testing a batch of Eley High Velocity HP. Shot number 1 after a long zero session was a rabbit, hit through the eye. Very messy indeed. The next two shots were squirrels, being body shots in both cases, left a sight I cannot put on this forum tiny hole on one side, a hole the size of a golf ball on the other with bits and bobs comming out. The last was my second and third fox, (only one pictured) which was taken from a standing position at 20 yards. It really shows just how powerfull tiny rimfire bullets can be! but I am never using this high velocity stuff anymore. Big bang, and a lot of mess.. the subs do the best job So, hers fox number 3! (note ear protectors. I wore these for most of the shots.. even with a silencer these are louder then subs fired without a silencer from a .22. More like an HMR) These young foxs are really taking over here. I spotted around 4 in this field.

Works VERY well with subs. But I dont think HV will damage it either, I have never heard of this being a problem? though the mod wont make it much much more silent using HV's Thanks for the replies Dont worry, there will be pictures with the .222 as theres heaps and heaps of fox here. Just need to get it zeroed, and me cleared to shoot alone
rogo
Nope Wednesday Im out with my mentor who I have to do a few sessions, legally, with before I can go out alone with it Strange. So the 22lr firing either sub-sonic or HV is not as dangerous as a .222?
Hunter
Well either way your screwed if you get hit by them at close range. I have .222 bullets that are the same weight as standard .22lr, however the tripple has a lot more power due to the large case behind it, firing more then 3 times the amount of powder. The tripple also has a much longer danger range, as these can kill or wound a person up to 5km where as .22lr is around the 1.5km range. But, I dont have a choice.. the police dont know if I can handle a weapon safley enough, and have set these requirments. Im happy enough to spend a few days being mentored. I will learn a few other things, and have some company to shoot with for once. The good thing is it is cleared for vermin, fox and can be used on any land cleared for that calibre or larger so once the mentored sessions are sorted, I will have good flexability with it. dunganick
the silly thing is that a .222 is less dangerous in my opinion than a .22lr the .222 will almost certainly be used with a bt bullet, so if it touches anything it will break up and maybe travel 100yards. however if you get a bounce off a rimfire (which you do as they are lead) then it could go hundreds of yards quite easily. in my opinion the range a gun will reach makes no difference to how dangerous it is. Can you honestly tell me that you are any more or less likely to hit someone if you shot blind into the air, 1.5miles away or 5. you are firing it at somewhere and you dont know what it will hit. It dosent matter how far it gets, you still dont know where its going. Both very similar weight projectiles as well (10grains in it)
Hunter
Too true. This is why .17HMR is becoming more popular very quickly. But IF you were hit buy a tripple, it would be worse then buy a .22lr, however in order for a bullet to travel so far, it must be pointed (I think 33.3 degrees?) into the sky in order to travel so far. When fox hunting, this is quite unlikely!
SPEEDY
Great work There’s nothing quite as nice as a dead fox. I didn’t think that you could suppress hyper velocity rounds? At least not without certain suppressers. We used cans on our SR98’s in 7.62NATO that could suppress a 168gr pill that started out at 2700fps but it slowed them right down and didn’t truly suppress them, as opposed to some 200gr rounds that I loaded at 1000fps, the trajectory was more or less the same but there was a definite difference in sound as they flew a couple of meters over your head down in the butts and you could tell which was which quite clearly. dunganick
You can silence the muzzle noise from the round, but can never remove the sonic crack

Great shooting with the .22rim, you are doing a good job Nice to see you have a mentor,(have you known him long) not many people are willing to help out enouigh these days. Don't rush yourself, and just take on board what your mentor is willing to share with you, you have a long tme ahead of you in the world of shooting, may your success continue -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [quote name='dunganick' date='May 29 2006, 12:51 AM' post='182052' in my opinion the range a gun will reach makes no difference to how dangerous it is Nick, it's not the gun that is dangerous, it's the person who is charge of it that can make it dangerous
